I am looking to hit south florida for swords but am unsure as to when I should come to have the best shot at actually landing one. I was also hoping if anyone can recommend a reputable charter outfit. This whole picking one online is not that easy. I find it hard to look at a outfits website and decide form that word of mouth is best. Thanks for the help.
Justin Also I am not sure if it matters but I am looking to fish standup tackle and no electric reels. |

Justin,
Swordfish migrate and it is almost impossible to predict when is going to be a good time. Traditionally we have more fish in the summer but they are smaller and caught at night. The larger fish usually are more abundant in the fall, and throughout the winter, but in the past year we have gone through extended periods of extremely unpredictable and inconsistent fishing. The winter also has the windiest weather often making getting out for days in a row difficult. If you want to fish at night it's all manual with stand-up gear. The electrics only come into play when day dropping but you can fish manually on the bottom in deep water as many do it. If I were to suggest the most reliable fishery for South Florida Swords I'd say charter the Catch-22 out of Bud and Mary's in Islamorada for a daytime trip. I believe at one stretch they caught a fish on something like 125+ consecutive trips. No one can come close to matching that, and they fish manually. Let's see if you get any other suggestions. Thanks for all the info guys. While I would love to catch a big one, this trip is more of a just catch your first one no matter the size kinda venture. From what I have read here it seems you guys use rather large gear. I usually bring my own stuff since most stock rods dont fit me well. Is 700 to 750yds of braid to a 100 foot wind on ok. If so my ATD 30's should work fine right? Or are 50s and 80s really required equiptment? Obviously any rigging I will leave to the boat to take care of. Again thanks for all the help.

all the boats above will provide the gear, do not even set up for it, depending on where you are going will determin the way of fishing for them, guys in the keys run a totally different rig and set up than we do north of miami, current plays a big part on that. the farther north you go the farther they run out to fish.
Cooper Janick is best local suggestion I can give you he is always on the fish. Marauder1 is his boat 561-414-0483

add a weight, light, bait, line and a fish and you need the low gear just to get any line back....
... (I must turn this handle 2 million more times !!) ... or you an just push the button and drink beer...
