Default How big is this fish?

Hey Guys - I went daytime swordfishing yesterday and fought this beast for five and a half hours. After getting it to the dock there was nothing big enough to weight it on. I did the formula for estimating swordfish weight with the measurements - lower jaw/fork length x girth squared / 800 and came up with 391 but everyone keeps telling me it's bigger than that. Any ideas if 391 sounds right? The overall length was 138in and the lower jaw fork length was 93" and the girth was 58". The last sword I caught was about 90lbs so this fish is in a whole different league for me. Any help would be appreciated. This truly is the greatest fish I've ever caught!! thanks!

That's a slob for sure!! Congrats. The formula is pretty accurate. Looks around 400 lbs. for sure. BTW, overall length is pretty much not used and kind of meaningless since it does not factor into the equation and many swords have battered, shortened swords anyway.

What kind of tackle and bait were you using?

Congrats!!! The Keys remain hot.

I was using a 50w Tiagra (nothing electric) with 1000yrs of 80# Power Pro and a 100ft top shot of 200# mono with a squid for bait. Fought it on a straight butt rod in stand-up gear. I was on the boat alone so the fight + driving the boat made for an exciting fight. thanks for the congrats, I'm still on an andrenaline high!!

Didn't - drug that thing 30 miles to shore. That's why his gills look messed up, they were bent backwards by the time I got in. It took 3 of us to get it out of the water.

Wow That is what I call the standing ovation catch. Great job very nice slob. That fish looks every bit of FOhundred too. Excellent story and I don't think I could a drug that girl to home without it being shark sushi either.

Congrats on a nice fish, job well done. I have caught a couple fish around 94 inches one was 383 one was 378 so length girth formula sounds close to its weight. Congrats on a awesome catch.

Your profile says you have a cat. Put that fish in the middle and ride it like a cowboy all the way home.
