Default european swords

hi guys, have just joined this great forum, im english but live in the south west portugal. i am a full salt water addict, spend time casing tuna marlin and mahi in season, out of we have good sharkin. there appears to be great conditions hear for swords, but cant find any locals who fish for them, or any internet info.I am keen to try for one of these elusive beasts, but not sure if i would be wasting my time or not.(cos dont know the seasons) Also, the area were i think the wsordas could be is often were the sharks are, do you have a problem eith sharks biting u off. also would you recomend chunking while drifting? any advice would be welcomed, and anyone with experience visiting this side of the pond i would be more than happy to take em out and fish thanks loads.

If you have a problem with sharks, troll for them instead of drifting. Most sharks don't hit trolling lures. Mako's being the exception. You will also be able to cover more ground, and be able to find where they are feeding. Once you find them fish them how ever you like.

Hey Corvina, you sure got some good wine and eats in Portugal.

Anyway, the trolling advice sounds good for your area. However, I would also look for sunning swords in your area as the cooler waters compel them to sun like they do in New England or Southern California. They can be coaxed to hit on the surface. Good luck.

Juan

Here we fish depths...we don't have to be as concerned with water temp. We get them typically between 1000-2000ft. I would imagine that you typically get colder water around your area than we do here, and the fish in your neighborhood are very sensative to the currents. I would surf around the internet and look for surface temperature charts for your area. If you can find a hard edge where warm water meets cold, you fish on the warm side of that edge and you can probably find fish. I would bet you could find swords where you find other pelagics. For us, its as easy as finding the gulfstream and getting out to our depth.

Follow the bait. Go to the local fish markets and ask when they get fresh squid and or mackerel in large numbers. That's when the bait is in the area, and the swords will be there feeding on them.

Canyons and seamounts with steep depth contours in 500+ feet of water are usually good areas to try. Looks like you have some very good structure to the south and southeast of where you are. Those canyons would be a good place to start.

You can catch a swordfish any day of the year here, but the fishing is definitely better during certain times of the year (fall/winter).

Not sure about your area, but I would bet if other pelagics are around there is some bait and there will be swordfish there as well. Off the Northeast US when we canyon fish, there are plenty of swordfish caught at night during the tuna, mahi, and marlin season. Your season for tuna/marlin/mahi would be a good time to give it a shot. Just be careful with the weather when heading offshore at night.

Funny thing, not many reports being filed from Texas, are you guys reporting your fish.

BTW, you are on the watch list for reporting compliance at NMFS. I have heard your boat name come up at least 4 times in the last month over reporting questions..
You could clear things up with a list of confirmation numbers

Ron is on the NMFS Advisory Panel. At each meeting the NMFS enforcement gives their update. Ron was trying to give you a heads up and should have done it through a PM. It came out wrong this way.

He gives a lot of his time and money to represent the recreational anglers and was only trying to help.

This also looks like a good area to me. Historical records show
that the best season (and this may be weather related) is
usually spring into summer though they are caught there year
round. Maybe Vinnie can add to this. cheers, arthur
