It's nice to have the handle option... I can see it being useful for the end-game when line control is important. Plus the reel is 1/2 the size and less cumbersome than the LP.

I would spend the extra money and get the LP. Its faster, and seems to be a lot more durable. There has been a shitload of nice ones caught on the diawas, but most of the people I know have had nothing but problems with them. And if you buy an LP and have an issue, they are right down the street and take VERY good care of their customers.

I was in grand slam last week and saw a customer returning a diawa for issues with the connector... Where it attaches to the reel. This person takes excellent care of all equipment and had a failure while the rig was on the bottom. The reel was sent back and fixed but after the down time the reel was still not fixed 100%... I have had unreal customer service with eric at LP... I would highly recomend their products!

If for no other reason than service anyone considering dropping big $$ for a deep drop reel should not consider anything other than the LP1200. I know it's bigger and heavier BUT it pulls like a Mack Truck and "should" you need service Eric at LP is the best with customer care and getting your reel back to you as soon as he possibly can. They are so good about customer service that when they come up with an upgrade they modify your reel - FREE OF CHARGE - no bill of sale - no questions asked. I just got mine back yesterday after upgrades were made. It was working fine but I happened to see Eric and he said "you need to bring your reel in for some upgrades". Try to find that kind of service anywhere -let alone with a Daiwa product. I wouldn't even suggest trying to save 1K with an mp3000 unless you specifically want to hand crank which I was over a long time ago. Harry

Steve- I think you know my feelings on the matter. The LP is bad ass and getting better all the time.

When your hand cranking a sword from the bottom they rarely fight. Usually your sitting there retrieving line.. That's not very fun.... I dunno who enjoys cranking up 2000 feet of slack line just to feel um pull every once and a while.. Then you maybe get a 15 min fight in the end. if you have a chair... Otherwise who wants to stand there and crank out of the rod holder.. I dunno maybe I am crazy

The Daiwa is a fishing reel and the L/P is a winch. The only reels that compare to the drag system on the Daiwa is a Penn or Shimano reel fitted with an L/P or Dolphin motor. I do not know anyone who has not experienced drag issues or has not lost a fish with the L/P 1200 due to the reel locking up. The Guys at L/P are great friends and Customer service is #1, the only difference with Daiwa is they are located in California. I have 2 of the mp3000's for 3 years and have worked them as hard as any L/P 1200 out there without failure. The reel is light and easy to operate. The 2 advantages over the L/P are the option to take up slack with the crank handle and the variable power control. If for any reason the line get's slack, like unsnapping the lead, the Daiwa can be re-engaged slowly with out popping the hook. All other reels are only on and off and engage at full speed. Sure this can be done with the drag, but who wants to back the drag all the way off when a fish is on the line, that is a sure way to create a birds nest. The reel is a little slower than the L/P (12 min. full retrieve at 2800' w/scope), this is only an issue when bringing up an empty rig. I seldom use full speed when a fish is on, unless it's coming at me and then without tension the speeds are similiar between the reels. As for power, both reels have more than enough. The advantage the L/P has is interchangable spools. The only issue with the Daiwa in my opinion is that the power cord is too light, I have refitted my reels with a heavier cord and all is fine. Another option I am looking at is that the Daiwa will operate up to 16v. If I can get the voltage in the 14v to 15v range I think the speed issue will be history. Not sure how to do that yet, but it seems that the 24v from my old L/P sockets could be reduced using some sort of step down converter? Last edited by Broadbill-Pro; 09-23-2009 at 06:49 AM.. |

TJ- I'm not sure that I understand your post-are you still hand cranking when deep dropping now that Buck has the 3000?

Hey trust me they can still happen...this pic was taken just after 5hrs. And for the bs'ers: yes we saw it, no it wasnt the bottom, no it wasnt a shark, and we fish pretty heavy drag. At that point it was around 45lbs, later confirmed on a scale. Tried to get ahead of the fish and plane him up multiple times, just wasnt meant to be. Hooked up @ 5:30pm, mainline failed @ 11:20pm.. They roam ![]() ![]() ![]() Note the number on the counter, its not feet, but its relativley close.

I believe that Vit Sea the winner of this weekends daytime tournament fought a fish for over 3 hrs and it ended up at 89 inches?

Yes, I do- Famous quote by the Doc: "All roads lead to LP"
Not trying to start a sport/non-sportfishing war, just trying to get some opinions as it is a pricey investment. Everybody's input is greatly appreciated, thanks

This Remote will control your reel, as well as your boat, so you can catch fish while watching tv at home...
