I like both the Diawa and LP, I think still if it came down to it, i would get the diawa. I know a lot of people who have them and have caught fish them and have been relatively issue free. After fishing the LP the past few trips I thought for sure it was much stronger, but after doing a few tests at the house, i found that the diawa is a beast! It is a bit slower though. And yes I use the hand crank on it a lot.

Doesn't pretty count anymore? The MP is way prettier than the LP.

I use the hand crank also, but by far the best feature of the Daiwa is the variable power control. The torque is the same at low speed or high speed, for those stubborn fish just set the speed at about 50%, check the drag so that you can stop the reel by gripping the braid (including fish load) and let her eat.

I have 2 proto-types that came off the VP of Daiwa's desk 3 years ago and have not had a problem with any of the things you mention. I use them every weekend. I would assume that a 2009 model would have less issues.

Not putting down the L/P, but they have had far more issues than the Daiwa. I know of one reel that has made more trips to L/P than the ocean. L/P has the drive gear figured out, but they still have some catching up to do on the drag and spools. Those Guy's are on the ball, everyday that goes by the reel is improved. When the LS1200-2 comes out you Guy's are going to weep..
BroadBill-Pro, I have just been in a unique position to be able to deal with all of these manufacturer's for the life of these reels and see and hear about all the defects directly from them. I know handfuls of people who have never had a problem with there MP. But i know More that have.. also every time LP does new runs of reels they get better. Diawa hasn't changed anything since it has been released.. LP has improved on all aspects of their reels through out the generations of the s-1200. They have both had drag issues but LP seemed to have cleared most of them up. I just hope that this information helps the Gentleman who is doing his homework on them before he purchases!!

Marcel, Honestly from what it sounds like, the LP is the "better" reel, but I still can't seem to bring myself to buy one over the Diawa. Really, you need to fish both and see which one fits you better. In my case, I like the way the Diawa fishes. Just like Vinny had said, the lever is key and it's not jerky like when you come on and off the button on the lp.

Nick.. I have fished Both reels and i've caught on both of them.. from small to big fish. Everyone has their own opinions and preferences. I can only speak about what i've seen through my own experiences and my customers experiences. Then share it with everyone else..

Good Point. Either way I feel i can play the fish with the Diawa. Last few fish I caught involved a lot of hand cranking to while moving the rod around the boat and hooking the fish. A nice feature IMO. Like I said, I don't think you can go wrong with either, both have their flaws.... It's personally preference.

i gotcha.. i never move the rod.. it stays in a designated swivel rod holder... so i would never see that problem.. but i definitely understand the reasoning for the handle in your situation. when i was in the keys we caught one 231 on the MP. My brother fought it stand up in a harness for like 2 hours. he tried to do it manually but was only able to find his groove with the electric. especially after the first 45 minutes.. if you used the other reels he wouldnt have been able to fight it stand up.

You are right. But then again not many people fish like we/I do..... we make things interesting and do it a little more in depth.

IMO comparing deep dropping for swordies and deep dropping for queens, yelloweyes, tiles, mystics etc is not nearly the same thing.

What about when ya reach the weight? ...or when big Bertha decides to pull 1000ft of line off the reel? You don't keep the power ON while that's happening, do ya?

No I dont keep the reel moving then, but I have only had one fish dump the reel and that was a tail hooked big eye thresher. Most of the other fish come and dont put up much fight till they get to the surface.

Guess its "Different Strokes" for different folks when it comes down to MP300 vs. LP s-1200

Had to toss in the visual . . . .

last week I fished with electric reels for the first time. we used both daiwa 3000 and LP 1200... I'm no button pusher... but I don't believe those reels are in the same category... the LP was so much better.... was not even funny, twice as fast, stronger, better counter... in a whole different class.....

Just say no to button pushers...
