Somewhere around 90 miles... which doesn't include nighttime swordfishing/drifting or normal deep-dropping.

I have had better days hand cranking than I have with the electric. My best day in the keys we went 4 for 7 out of bud n mary's... Its alot of work... I have no problem using the electric now... Like I said before most of the time your reeling slack line as the fish swims the weight up.... Whats the sport in that? Anyways most boats we daytime on are center consoles with no fighting chair... Strapping into the stand up harness to retrieve line for and hour isn't that much fun.... I have no problem dragging schoolies in on the electric either...

The s-1200 is overall the Best 12v reel on the market Between the gear driven level wind, digital counter that counts in feet and has negative memory, and fully sealed internal reel it also has one of the smoothest drags I've seen on a true electric reel. The LP conversions are also a great choice. They will give you the drag of a true Reel and are absolute beasts. But you sacrifice on the level wind and counter. It seems that the MP have had tons of issues with there level winds, motors, and counters. But yes they do have a handle. every one i know never uses it though. even if you fight the fish stand up in a harness you can still use the electric. And hey why not!! It is why you bought the reel in the first place!!

I have 2 proto-types that came off the VP of Daiwa's desk 3 years ago and have not had a problem with any of the things you mention. I use them every weekend. I would assume that a 2009 model would have less issues.

Not putting down the L/P, but they have had far more issues than the Daiwa. I know of one reel that has made more trips to L/P than the ocean. L/P has the drive gear figured out, but they still have some catching up to do on the drag and spools. Those Guy's are on the ball, everyday that goes by the reel is improved. When the LS1200-2 comes out you Guy's are going to weep.

I have never fished out of Bud and Marys but I would say that they keep
everything they catch to make money. You are a mate on a boat so fishing is a way you make your living which I understand. The thing that bothers me
is it takes the sport out of it when using a electric reel than cranking
it. I am waiting to see the big marlin guys start using electric reals to catch
1000 lb marlin.
The average weekend fishing person does not have the $$$ to invest into
daytime swording. I just want to know how much swordfish can one person
eat.

Vinny not to bash Diawa but with the exception of you I know 5 people that have a mp3000 and use it regularly. And all 5 of them have had issues with the things that were mentioned. All electric reels will have their issues, but when it comes down to it you cant beat the customer service at LP. Your reel does not have to be shipped out, and its free to get fixed. For the normal person, diawa is not free by any means. Just my .02

Wasnt meant like that..just trying to prove a point. The 5 people I was making a reference too all use their reels weekly and catch fish routinely.

I know... just giving you a hard time. Swordfishing has gotten rather depressing. I've resorted to being happy about catching pilchards. Maybe I'll try connecting the Daiwa to the castnet.

Now your going way off topic. Who cares what is done with the fish. Its none of your business. They have a buoy permit and all licensing to sell fish legally. They are stand up guys who catch fish on rod and reel and yes they can sell them if they wish to. Who cares... The bottom line is your comparing two totally different styles of fishing. To say "o I would love to see the marlin guys start using electrics is ridiculous".... So I guess you think we should all sell our electrics and start hand cranking when we go to the Bahamas and deep drop. There are plenty of boats that fish the bbc that have bought electrics for deep dropping and fro day time swording... The way I see it is you only have so much time in a day... You get way more drops in with an electric so who cares if you find it unsporting... Your using your time better when you fish with the electric. I have hand cranked out of the rod holder for 2 years day dropping before I bought an electric. I have no reason to go back to hand cranking... I don't see any less sport in using the electric....

here we go.... fighting over an electric reel... I believe it's due to that extra testosterone and lack of exercise... you guys should hand crank a few fish, that way you wouldn't have the energy to fight....

If how many fish have been caught on a reel is an indication of it's quality, then Daiwa passed the test.

Both reels have their good and bad points, L/P being made in our home town is certainly a good reason to buy it. In a perfect world the Daiwa would be faster and the L/P would not lock up due to drag issues and spool spreading. Those problems are nearly worked out now and L/P will upgrade your existing reels with the new parts.

If cost is an issue then the Daiwa should be considered, if your not concerned with all the bells and whistles like level-wind and counter then the Dolphin motor fitted to a Penn 80w or 130w makes a great 12v reel for about $2000. It has more than enough power and speed.

If you Guy's want to see something really neat, check out the Dolphin kite reel with wireless remote and level-wind. Pull in your kite while fighting a fish or while on the opposite side of the boat.
