This is a branching topic from the Chum topic. It would be interesting to note if there is any correlation to the presence of sharks, let's say Night Sharks and also Mako Sharks, and the presence of Swordfish.
Some thoughts.... When you hook up on a Night shark do you still find it reasonable to get a simultaneous hook-up with a swordfish, or do the swordfish become scarce? Of course the reverse sequence could be considered too. (I imagine if you fish a large spread this could be a mute point.) The same inquiry would go for Makos. It would seem like Makos and Swordfish could be found together since one likes to eat the other. But if you have a Mako hooked-up or just in the vicinity, do the swordfish scatter or do they remain in the area. I am not sure if I have noticed any posts of double headers consisting of both shark and swordfish. From my observations, it has always been one or the other at any particular part of a drift. Another point that would be interesting to understand.... Has anyone found sharks (Mako and Night sharks) to hang around a particular area or can they be found just about anywhere? |

When I was fishing with Slasher one night we had a shark hit our tip rod at about 120ft and a sword slam our 450' bait at the exact same second. The shark was a skinny little 3 ft piss ant but the sword was a good size fish. I couldn't believe the little shark had managed to get a 10 O in his little mouth. Also amazing is that earlier in the night this shark had been circling our boat for a few hours just inside the green glow of the light. We picked up the spread, moved about a mile in and up and reset. The same shark from earlier was the one that hit the tip rod. He had a good go at my hand a few times while I was removing the hook. He reminded me of one of those skinny 3 ft gators all charged up from the sun I used to catch when I was a kid. A little stick of dynamite.
I catch CNS's all over the place. Makos don't seem to be around with them. Maybe if there was a rotting whale carcass or something sizeable in the water things might be different? I don't think anything hangs around with makos once their presence is known. Makos eat other sharks and they are not known for personality. The night we caught the big mako we didn't have any more hits the rest of the night and we stayed out almost until sun up. Makos follow the fish on their menu. Tunas swords etc... even dolphin. So swords may be around feeding and not know they are being stalked from below. I think the night that Mako slammed into the top of our boat like a torpedo it had missed a sword we didn't see that had come into the light. I think the only reson the Mako missed was because the sword was able to see him from the light way down below. Just a theory  |
