Welcome to the forum! At night, I like to stagger my baits anywhere from just under the surface to 400' down, depending on where the thermocline is. My bottom machine can see it, and I adjust accordingly. I don't really know what kind of currents and bottom structure you have on the other side of the planet, but over here, we drift along the edge of the continental shelf, between 400 and 600m of water depth. Try and look where there are any kind of humps or canyons which divert water flow, and look for concentrations of squid, the swordie's favorite snack. Good luck, and let us know how you do. And use lights or glowsticks. They help a lot.

What port do you fish out of??

Besides Capt JJ's good advice, let me add that I would try the continental slope, the area
after your shelf where the bottom depth changes rapidly. I would troll at night and look
for areas where the plankton greet you with their light show. cheers, O

Thanks for them tips boys,
Mate I dont just fish outta 1 port.
Being trailerable we tow anywhere up to 12 hours up or down the coast to fish.
Have fished from the Gold Coast in Queensland, outta Sydney the New South Wales south coastal ports of Jervis Bay, Eden, Merimbula and Bermagui right thru to Portland on the west coast of Victoria, and down to Tasmania a few times a year.

Depending on where I am will depend on what sorta ground I will be over.

Broady fishing is near on non existent down here,
The pros do get em on Long lines so they are there.

I just wanna be on the boat and see 1, let alone be the angler.

Main location I want to target them out of is Portland,
As for Krill, we have acres of the stuff.
10 football feild size patches at times.
The nutrient rich waters of the southern ocean pumps straight up the shelf and the life and activity where this happens is incredible.
On a dead pan flat calm day you can actually see the water pushing to the surface and creating its eddies.
This happens over the first drop at about the 400 -500 fathom mark.

Local baits are anything from pilchard/sardine, red bait (cross between a yellowtail mackerel and a pilchard), stripey tuna at times, juvenile southern bluefin tuna, and masses of squid from inch long sprat thru to 4-5 pound mongrels.

I will let you boys know when I get the chance to fish for these buggers.

If you read this and reckon ya can point me in the right direction dont hesitate to post, I am a sponge and you boys over in Yankland seem to have more than a bloody fair grasp on how to catch em.

Cheers Anca
