I hadn't heard anything about the fate of this show for months, then it came up at the NMFS meeting last night. Then I saw the commercial spot towards the end of DC, like y'all did. Glad it's finally going to be aired. I heard it's gonna be good.

Didn't Linda Greenlaw get arrested by Canandian authorities during the making of the show?
I know she got arrested but can't remember if it was for this show. J |

If I remember correctly, although I could be wrong but I believe she was arrested during the taping of the show. When the show was going to be aired on a different network and got canceled, I sent an e-mail to the programming director of Discovery Chanel and suggested that their network look into acquiring the rights to the show and air it either before or after the deadliest catch show. From what I understand, several other inquiries were made by other fishermen requesting Discovery take on the show as well. I'm glad they listened and I am looking forward to seeing the show in August. Martin

Well... since it was filmed and produced by the same folks that do DC, it wasn't a far stretch for Discovery to pick it up. I'm not sure why they didn't grab it in the first place. I guess they were apprehensive after that lackluster Lobstermen show didn't shine as well as they hoped. The sword show should be interesting, since there's more variety of catches on a longline set. Not just crabs, ice, more crabs, a big wave, less crabs, greenhorn gets canned, more crabs, etc... Now we'll get swords, makos, dogfish, and others... Never know what'll be on the next hook!

That Deadliest Catch last night was gnarly. Huge waves. And that boat that rolled 90 degrees off Acutan Island? Crazy... All those guys definately earned their pay this season.

You probably won't wee any tapes of Linda being arrested, the Commercial PLL indusry had full editing rights and nothing that shows the longline industry in anything but the best light will be aired. This according to high level Bluewater Fisherhmen execs.
No turtles, no bycatch, now illegal activity, longlining in a perfect world. |

Dammit. But I guess the "first season" needs to establish itself before they can allow the juicier bits to be shown.

I liked the show but didn't care for their release techniques. The Mako and the pup sword probably didn't do to well via gaff and release on the boat from NC early in the show. Not to be a cry baby here as I have no problem eating what I catch and releasing what I do not want but you would think they would at least cut the line for a release especially since not every swords a marker. The under water shot with the mate on the wire was pretty solid too.

Frayedknot - I have never been longlining yet I understand bi catch and releasing dead fish for these guys. My guess is their permit only allows certain fish and market price has an influence on what they do with their non target species (wahoo, dolphin etc). So according to you if a sword pup is still swimming when brought to the boat as it was in the show, its ok to get a gaff shot in the gills, then release it as long as your a bad ass mother fer, right? That argument is probably not helping the cause of commercial guys and you may want to let their spokespeople do their jobs instead of you.
I'm no tree hugger and have taken my fair share for a rec guy. My point being, is that it didn't look to tough to cut the line and release the pup / mako as your second pic shows with a turtle about to be cut off and proves my point. Outside of losing a hook they could have released that pup without a gaff shot. Off my soap box now and apparently back to being a pu..y and baby s..t. Thanks.

That pup was dead. Like Drew said dead discard. Frayed none of the pics except the turtle release were US caught.

The show was a little bit of a let down. As usual, too much drama and inconsequential shots. Did not have to see that much loading of the boats or the towing of Greenlaw's boat or some of the captain interviews. The best shots are fishing. I thought Capt. Chomp's girlfriend and bank roller was pretty hot.
Capt. Chomps reminds me of a few people on this Forum. ![]() That one boat did get a bunch of sweet markers. The tuna (I am guessing between 400 - 600) was a slob. Took them over three hours to land mano a mano. Let's see how the rest of the shows go. I am interested to see how they handle Linda Greenlaw's arrest. Laters. Juani |
