Discovery has a recipe for a successful show. If there are as many interesting characters as in Deadliest catch this should be a big hit. In the end I think it will be more about the people and less about the fish. I'm not sure how many years DC has been on, but i think by now viewers tune in for the stories, personal drama and less to see a bunch of crab hauled.
I liked it. Looking forward to next week! |

YES! Free-gaffed a 3lb ocean tally! Woooopeee! Beautiful night, mostly clear sky, got to see a few meteors... but only 1 pathetic slashed bait. Didn't see or hear a single other (fishing) boat. But it was rush-hour for freighters. Got rocked pretty good by a CG Cutter that looked like it was trying to set a speed record from a dead start.
As far as the show goes... I was a little disappointed. There seemed to be a lot missing. It's almost as if they skipped the first episode. Shows like DC had the advantage of 1 or 2 independent documentaries about Berring Sea crabbers that preceded the series, which did a lot to explain the gear, methods, and dangers. So when DC started, there was already a general knowledge in people's minds (who watch those kind of shows). This one just mentioned that they bait hooks with macks, and all of a sudden it's the next day and they're hauling back. I've got a pretty good understanding of PLLing, as do most folks on this forum. So I didn't really need a refresher course. But for the average Discovery Channel viewer, I can see some folks being a little lost. They should have used the first episode as a primer to get viewers up-to-speed, instead of diving right into the drama. But hey... Timmy Palmer got some air time!!! (cursing out the engine)

After coaxing Linda out of retirement, and setting her up with having to play "catch up" because she hadn't fished in 10 years, they sure put her on a boat that as she said "had been sitting out of the water for 6+ months and just had the engine overhauled". Not the smartest of first trips to be making and the breakdown, in my opinion while predictable, portrayed them in a bad light.
The "southern rebel" made it seem like he would lose his boat to the bank (Not the Grand Banks) if he did not score big time thus the run in his "plastic boat" to the Grand Banks. That was a boat just over 50 feet and never seemed as if it was even able to sit in the water without a list to one side. Another boat not best suited for the show. I've come across the "tail of the bank" on many occasions on a big ship on a great circle return route from Northern Europe and can tell you the area can produce violent weather for even a big ship let alone those "corks" that were in the show. At least in the Deadliest Catch the boats are very seaworthy and are tested on a daily basis in ferocious weather. My overall opinion was that the first episode came off poorly and will get virtually no notariety, and be far less popular, than the Deadliest Catch. It did end on a good note with the catching of a nice Bluefin so let's see how the rest of the series goes. I don't think there is anything about the Deadliest Catch that they cannot show as you see them "rail dump" females and small crabs as well as see the loss from freezing and too long in the holding tanks. Why was the PLL industry allowed to have editing rights (if that is true) - were they afraid to show the industry for all it is? Harry |

I bet a lot of the general DC viewers were wanting to know what the guy had a hack saw for when the fish were on the deck. Tree huggers would have had a field day with the coring of live fish!!

Crabs aren't cute and cuddly like fish, and they're seen by the hundreds per pot... They just don't get the enviros riled up as much.

Hey Bill, back in my pier #5 days I had hydraulics made for me that were put on are 10/O reels with wire they were small little drive motors and we had them chromed they were so sweet! and fast to. We use to catch black groupers on the reef that were 50+ and drag them in like nothing. We also used them for AJ, Tiles, and dragging drone spoons for kings, lots of them back then.

A very large number of commercial boats. Look at DC the North Western only has one motor.

Technically, it's an engine, Quack.
Diesel engines are typically very reliable... when they're in good mechanical condition. Obviously the Sea Hawk's was not.

I'd say something about the first fish show being a dead discard but my buddy would chime in and tell me what an a$$hole I was, so I'll just keep from typing......

Ofcourse anything I say will be regarded as jealousy towards Linda by a few knuckle heads, but for what it's worth I thought the show lacked detail. Just when I thought it was getting boring watching crab pots being hauled over the rail, I almost fell asleep during the hauling scenes lastnight. I could pick the show apart from sending a boat to the Banks with a questionable main engine to spending 3 hours on a single fish, but I'll save it. What was presented is something that has existed since the beginning of fishing, the 90% of the fleet that catches 10% of the fish. Your seeing the best of the worse. Maybe the camera angles will make next weeks show more exciting. Last edited by Broadbill-Pro; 08-12-2009 at 02:55 PM.. |

The shows needs help with the graphics and editing for sure. I would agree 3hrs on a circle hooked giant was to much. But it could have just been edited that way. But it is only the first of nine shows and I am sure the editing will get better as they go. Let me ask you all something. Who else would like to see Ron and Vinny do a LL trip together for the show!!!!! That my friends would make for some great TV!!! Instead of an arrest for fishing across the line. You would see an arrest for murder I think! LOL

"SWORD WARS"
I'm trying to set gear while Ron is deploying propellor fouling devices off my bow and throwing stinks bombs on the deck. There is no telling how far these fanatics will go.. |

Most seagoing ships are now all diesels and single engine at that. The diesel, when taken care of can provide reliable power for far longer than you imagine. I've experienced as much as 30,000+ trouble free hours on diesels with only repairs that we could accomplish with minimal parts and by ourselves. The accessories on the engine such as water pumps, PTO,s, filters, belts, starters, turbos and blowers, etc. require continual checking and maintenance. The engine itself ususally gives warning signs when things are going south and you have plenty of time to finish a trip needing a valve job or if you have blow-by problems due to a broken compression ring or bad cylinder liner. If you were listening carefully last night you might have heard the guy looking at the engine right after the oil was squirting all over and he was shouting shut it down say the problem was caused because it wasn't tight. Since they bent a couple of push rods what wasn't tight were the rocker arm hold down bolts, or the push rod adjustment screws, that control valve lash. Either would have been the result of a bad repair, no sea trial before sailing for the Grand Banks, and would cause push rods to get bent causing overheating. Quack, Always remember motors use electricity to drive things and engines are internal combustion machines that create power to also drive things. There has never been built either a "gas or diesel motor". They are engines but often inaccurately referred to as motors. (Marine Engineering 101) Harry |

Back to the show... I'm not too happy with Thom Beers' narration. I'm too used to hearing his voice on shows like Monster House, Pitchmen, and Monster Garage. A little too game-show-host sounding. Mike Rowe is probably too high-priced nowadays, but maybe they could have found a more serious voice for the narration. Or maybe George Clooney! hahaha

Thanks Harry for the 101!
That engine was rebuilt before they sailed. It was rebuilt by a person that did not do a good job. I can tell you all this. When the show ended that boat was in the best shape of it's life. Call it an at sea refit.
