32 ounce bank weight most of the time if the current slows down to 2 knots i would go with a 20 or 24 ounce bank...

As far as weight's go, I use heavier weights the deeper the lines go. With normal current, I use 16 oz. for 100 foot depths or less, 24 oz from 100-250, and 32 oz for tip rods and rods deeper than 250.

Default best to by good stuff...

I like the meduim nickle thick crimps and I use a lighter... a good oven mit for the crimpers is a good 'by' to keep them salt-water-resistant... and to soften the blow to the deck if'n ya drop them on a fancy boat...!

Default DL.. I think that is a lucky swivel....

I would cut off the bent up piece and she if it still has any magic left... nice fish...gold star on the rigging though he even has the glow bead and his crimpers look to be set right.. the tubeing is a plus...

Yeah! that rigging looks A+ and the crimping is well adjusted for sure. That is a lucky! swivel, my friend. Oh! by the way i lied about not having any open swivels, have had a few but did not loose fish to them guess i been lucky.

DL,

Thanks captain Ken I rest my case. these guys were thinking I was nuts for saying a $5 sampo swivle can be opened while fighting a fish on the bottom. I try to give a piece of advise and people think I am crazy! Great pic for the thread!

Steve If i remember correctly I think Larrys Snap opened up too. Good you were quick that night. With a snap anything is possible and it is foolish to think that the wire will not fatigue and actually pull apart . Most thin wire in high production is not domestic . Who knows if they are buying the whole snap from overseas anyway. I do know they make the swivel here in the US. not sure of the rest. Crimps are the way to go .

Why would you take the chance of a life time of losing that monster to a snap swivel that you tried to FIX when you could just crimp or put a new swivel on crimps only take a few seconds more and there much more realible just my 2 cents..

Default Ha! I never said to re-use the bent up piece...

some Creatures don't read ... and Irie you are crazy... it is funny I was talking to a good friend of mine yesterday and he was telling me they had a good fish on one night and they believe the thing got hooked good but tail wrapped and she ended up parting 600lb .. a 7-8lb bonita was the bait.. when I fished with Rob Creagan a long time ago we had a big sampo pull apart on a nice fish.. sampo sent us a whole card of swivels and he started cutting the potentialy bendable parts off .. I rig my stuff up to try not to loose.. takes years to learn the simple stuff ...online or a meeting 30 minutes but that still don't teach ya everything.. best to have fun smile and do everything right... and I think DL can get ya a lucky rabbits foot upon request..

You were there and witnessed it first hand. We had a daytimer up I slapped him on the deck then we all looked for the leader and realised the fish was no longer connected and the swivle had opened............ That was definately not crew error!

tt thanks but i dont need any rabbits foot....

DL,
It was a monster Mako at night, That is what convinced me to crimp from that point foward. It never opened, and we caught and released him, we would have needed a bigger boat to bring that one home.

when you guys are using the swivels instead of the snap swivel, are you using some kind of chafe gear, snugging the mono down tight to the swivel, or just crimping it looser?

CRIMP.

No Biminis, wind the the hook to the tip. Be careful with the sampo swivels that look like barrels (not barrel swivels) We have snapped two in half. Now we do not use them. The Sampo 250 lb barrel swivels will go right through the big guides. Less connections less worries.

For what it is worth.
