Fishing report, not catching report.
We saw a small and somewhat suspect weather window for Thurs/Fri so we made the run the the Flower Gardens (105NM) for Hoos. The plan was to fish the evening bite for Hoos then head to a good drop off 350ft to 2000ft in 2 miles and drift for Swords. We were not able to get bait as Galveston still has no bait stands open after Ike. We made bait on the way out, got a few hard tails a few blue fish and 12 nice 12" to 14" S.Macks we thought we were good to go. NADA for the evening troll other than kings, black fin tuna and a few UFO chop offs. Off to the drop, set up three lines a 50ft outside the Hydro Glow, a 200 and a 300 on the tip rod, moon was huge. Worked the tip up and down for a few hours, had a small shark and mad a move to adjust the drift. Kept at for a few more hours the wind picked up to 20+ so we decided to abort the morning troll and head back to the barn, only 120NM in 3 to 5s with yer odd 6ftr for grins. We think we have found a new spot on the charts goes from 1000ft to 4000ftin around 1nm! We will give it another shot ASAP! Rob C |

Looks like you're fishing near the Tequila rig. It's the one that sits right there on a ridge in 400', but on the offshore side it plummets to 1100'. It's only a few miles to the southwest of the West Flower Garden. The Tequila rig has got yellowfin on occasion, frequently has good wahoo fishing, and is known to hold warsaws, scary huge conger eels, and a few snowies.
One of the most consistent places for Yellowfin in the area is the Nansen Spar, which is another 40 miles or so to the SSE of the West Flower Garden. The Ocean Valiant is within a couple miles of it, giving you a pair of semi-submersibles to fish right next to each other. |

Mahi Madness 12/30/08
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, I had spoken with a good friend (Pirate King - AKA Mark) about going out on his 35ft Scarab with trip Yammies if the weather was good during the holidays and it just so happend that it did get good. Actually, my other good friend and our local 2cool instigator Chase This! AKA Brandon called me at 9:30 on Monday night and said that he and his bro were going and they were hitting the road ASAP. I told him that I needed to call Mark since we had spoken about going. I called and Mark without hesitation said he was ready to go. Since time was short we decided to meet the Chase This! bro crew out at the floaters and picked up the "ever ready to fish" Fishtruck - AKA Rob as our third crew member. We made our way down to the GYB and after searching for ice and hacksawing threw the boat locks (new locks and old key - been there done that before) while GYB security verified our indentity we were out of the "gate" at approx. 3:00 am. We were greated with 1 foot rollers and did a comfortable and safe 27kt cruise to the happy hunting grounds. We arrived around 7:00 am and we were told by our Chase This! crew that the troll bite was on! We set up our spread and the rest of the day was full of action. The most impressive of which was the Mahi action but the frenzying/flying tuna was also a site. There were more BIG Mahi than I have ever seen out there. We managed to fill our box with fish and decided to not take more of Mahi since we could have caught them until our arms fell off. Our YFT bite was not as good as the Chase This! bro crew but we were able to get 6 mid-sized eaters to compliment the Mahi. All in all, a tremendous day on the water and I had a great time with Mark and Rob along with enjoying a successful venture with the Chase This! bro crew. Tight Lines, AGF Attached Images |

Tuna Galore, Ghost Rider Style (10/25 - 10/26)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, this was a trip for the books. This trip was in every way one of the most enjoyable I have been on. Great crew, weather, catch, food, stories, you name it. Dave (Always-Gone-Fishing), Rob (fishtruck), Mike (Reeligion), Conrade, and myself accompanied Chris (Ghost Rider) for the long, but quick ride to bluewater. Upon arrival at the rig, it didn't take long to cover the 38 Fountain in tuna blood. Tuna were skying everywhere, and hitting about every lure in the spread. The consistent tuna action was interrupted by a NICE blue marlin that ate the short corner lure. After at least 10 jumps and grey hounding at the boat (and everywhere else), the line snapped...Didn't get to put our hands on the bill, but it was a sight to see. As the sun set, the tuna action continued. The quality of tuna was amazing. Every fish was SOLID. We ended up keeping 8 beautiful YFT. Sunrise Sunday, we started the day with a round of celebratory Bloody Marys in honor of the bloody deck. We didn't troll Sunday morning, or make any stops on the way in. We were more than pleased with out Tuna haul, and our near bill fish. Conrad made the mistake of announcing he caught his first yellowfin on this trip, so at the dock, it was Yellowfin Heart with a side of Bud light. He was man enough to do it, much respect earned. Chris is a great captain, and has an amazing boat. Not often you get to cruise at 60mph getting 1.0mpg. I think we hit 75mph in the ICW. We did have an issue with fuel. There was some confusion regarding how much Surfside Marina pumped. We thought they filled her up, but not so. Not a big deal. We made it home, and the management at Surfside was very professional about the situation. Looking forward to next time guys!!! |

I know that bridge....
The least you could have done was swing by and ask if I wanted to go along. We sat tied up to the dock for 2 weeks with nothing to do but chip paint and repaint. I'm on one of the white-on-white boats parked just to the east of the Surfside Bridge. Well...I'm off now, but will be back in a week and a half. |
