Awesome, I cant blame them for wearing the helmets, a 40lb tuna slapping you on the noggin would not be fun

On the long range trips out of San Diego they show videos like this on the almost 4 day run to the grounds. They "pump up" everyone as we hope to catch the "cows" (200+) once we reach our destination. On one trip I was on 20 of us caught 30 tons (plugged boat) in 3 1/2 days. It was one awesome experience. Each lure (called jigs) was hand made from a lead head and japanese feathers. They were rigged with barbless hooks and that was how the fish simply fell off when flipped into the holding area. They chummed the fish up then, as they do now, with live sardines. Forget about getting hit with a 40 pounder how about getting your ribs busted when a 200+ pounder crushed you. Often times fish got off and fell in the rack where the fishermen were standing and broke legs as they smashed around. It was dangerous at best. Harry

If you watch in the middle they start grouping 2 or 3 guys together on one jig.So when the 200lb fish hits you get 3 guys swinging it.A slob would take 1 guy down and sometimes rip the pole from there hands. These guys made all their own jigs and poles. They would use specially grown bamboo for their poles. Each guy tied his own feathers. It would be cool to swing the small fish but my back hurts when I see the 200lb fish hit!!!!

Both videos are bad azz...I can only dream of days like that. I wounder what kind of line they used to be able to just muscle those big tuna up over the rails. In the second video the fish seam more apt to get just on top of the rail and the men have to just straight muscle a 200+ pound fish into the hold and the line never breaks.

Quack maybe you know the answer??

Also kinda makes you think what they wold say about todays

It looks like a thick tar line.I saw an old video that showed them doing a full trip. They talked about the jigs, poles, etc. The fish went into giant chill tanks. Many boats sank because they got overloaded with fish. They would literally sink the boat with fish. They would fill the boat then steam right to the cannery docks. The tuna would then get sucked out of the hold almost frozen then canned in just a few hours.

I think I saw that very same video when I was pre-10 years old... on a nature show or Mutual of Omaha episode. And that scene has been burned in my noggin ever since. It's the thing dreams are made of!

that was the episode right before Marlin told Jim to jump out of the helicopter and attack the Alligator. We all know what happened next.
