Default RJ's Mako

Rj went day fishing on 9/17 and what a day it was.

First he caught a fish about 65'' that was released with a Sat Tag, I believe Justin posted more about that.

Second, after battling a sword that weighed 340# for over an hour, a Mako of about 500# decides to take a tail bite. They get the swordfish in the boat and it has a tag from Tim Palmer that was inserted 5 years ago. Fish was estimated at 50# when released.

While organizing the boat for the ride home, the mako hung around wondering where the beef went. Lots of pics were taken and when everyone had enough they started a slow ride west at about 12kts. After 10 minutes RJ catches a glimps of the mako behind the boat after 2 miles of steaming, the shark was chasing them. These photos show the shark swimming up to the transom several times while the boat is steaming for port. After a few attempts the mako bit the lower unit and stalled the engine.

Next week RJ will attempt to capture a live Mako, bring it to his shop, display it in a live well while feeding it sword steaks by hand, while snorkling on the surface.

I wonder if that's covered under warranty?

Heard about it the day it happened and RJ was just awe-struck. One of the coolest things I've ever heard of happening!

Well, this is not a boat accident! And it wasn't any propeller; and it wasn't any coral reef; and it wasn't Jack the Ripper! It was a shark. Saw one eat a rocking chair once!

OK now does everyone still want to disagree that tehre MAY BE SOME RESIDENT SWORD STOCK? HMMMMMMMM or lets see... Is it just a coincidence that this fish was tagged here 5 years ago and traveled to teh carolinas or maybe to the south side of cuba or PR and now just happens to be back in the same general area? Kinda hard to believe. I guess that fish learned his lesson and stayed on the bottom to feed for the past 5 years! lol

had a similar experience several years ago off Miami, found a fresh, sword carcus with a big Mako feeding on it. Got some very cool pics, fish had a tag in him fwiw. He was about 9-10' long as he swam under the boat with 8'6" beam and we saw him on both sides

Default Longfin Mako

That's a sick story for sure.

We had a Longfin eat a sword at the boat. Then it hung out for about 10 minutes.

Looks like we have been using the wrong bait all along. Lower units is the deal!
