Found this on the other forum...
http://www.snookguy.com/gallery/album03 Here's the story... To all my Fishing Friends, I just got this video clip of a swordfish at home in the abyss. The 9 second clip is of a swordfish swimming by a 6 foot crane hook. This is no little swordfish. I have an old Deep Sea Diving buddy who now works in the ROV business who sent this clip to me. They were working on the "Swordfish Project" strangely enough located at VK-917 * in the Gulf of Mexico when the fish swam by. The seabed at this location is 4,350 feet deep. They had just lowered the crane hook to the bottom and were standing by when the fish swam by. *VK stands for Viosca Knoll and the 917 is the block number assigned by the Mineral Management Service. The location is in between the Petronious and the Ram Powell or approximately about 70 Nautical Miles South of Biloxi, Mississippi or 115 Nautical Miles West South West of Destin, Florida. Now maybe they will believe us when we say that billfish feed in the entire water column and bottom longlines should not be allowed in the Closed Areas. Enjoy. [/i] |

Jerry:
I have asked that question before to some long timers. I have not heard of successful ventures in daytime, compared to the nightlife. But the data does indicate that is generally where they are at in the daytime or more correctly that they generally move up the water column at night. I think you will remain more successful at night. And in the same way that you only deep drop one line at a time, your sword fish spread would be limited to one line, instead of 4 or so. Besides, fishing on the dark side helps you to avoid those nasty sunburns, and somehow the rum just tastes a little better.Hey, only another 2 weeks and I am ready for a longitude adjustment. and just to stay balanced I will have to go see the DR. for a latitude adjustment as well. Should be all fixed up by then and ready to catch a swordfish again. Good luck man, one of these days you are going to get a double header. |

Hey RT, I hear you, the night time deal is very user friendly. I got some tips as to how they do it during the day and I am gearing up for a shot. These guys are using a heavy break away weight and once that gets to the bottom they give the line some violent tugs and break the weight off. Some use about 10lbs of rocks in some kind of bag. I may try my home made deepline weights. All other rigging is just like we are doing at night. Electrolume, 2lb weight etc etc. I for one would try it with my Lindgren and fish that 200lb Power Pro right off the rod tip. Any bite at all will be noticed. Remember thats how we first tangled with a sword a few months ago while deepdropping. Thats what got me so turned on to swordfishing here. It would be a hoot to catch one during daylight hours.

Swordfish in the daytime is very common in Venezuela. They fish the baits at 1000ft. or more. They dont have the current of the gulfstream to contend with. I have heard of some daytime success with Swords off of Islamorada.

I have 4500ft of Power Pro loaded on my deep drop reel so fishing 1200-1500 ft would not pose any problem. As far as the light, hmmm, no idea what depth they would implode at. I am sure they can withstand 1200-1500ft. However at $40 a pop I would ensure that only one would ever implode. We have always used those clear, ice cream cone shaped plastic deep lights and have never had a problem with one at those depths.

The Lindgren Pitman Electrlumes have been tested to 2200 feet for 3 months and no leaking! I'm sure they will go deeper but that's the limit on their test chamber.
As for the light sticks... I'll have an answer for you guys soon as they will be testing the sticks for me. I personally haven't had a LP stick leak at all the normal depths we fish for Swords. I'll be back.... -Tek |

The electralumes will never implode from 2,000 ft. I have also put many of the the dual sticks down to 1,500 with no leaks to date.
I have tried day fishing for swords now 3 times with no success. I saw a program filmed in Venezuela and they were getting a good sword bite during the day. They had a lot less current to contend with though. They used a 15 pound bag of rocks with 8lb test to get the the rigs down and then jerked it to snap the bag off. I used the same technique and it worked flawlessly. I found it intresting that hooking the swords down that deep changed the fight all together. It was like pulling up a tire until the sword got up to about 2-300 feet and then there was some fight. Now that summer is here I'll be experimenting a lot more with day time swording/deep dropping and of course I'll post the results here. Good or bad. |

)Before then we were using an electric reel at NIGHT on an experimental basis: not quite to the bottom but to about 900-1200 FSW, with about 8 lbs. of lead. You would not want to snag bottom while drifting with a full spread out. Even if we didn't catch a swordfish down deep we were hoping for something different, like an escolar or perhaps a big eye tuna, or perhaps the mystery fish. Times have changed indeed: It is now popular to fish on the sunny side once again. AND now People are even TROLLING on the DARKSIDE, for Swordfish! ![]() What's next?

great flashback in time here, it has become most common to slam a sword during daylight hours, Ray Rousher in his weekly fishing story had a sword checking out his kite bait this week , pitched him a livey on a flat line was not hungry. they are crazy fish and we only know 1/10th of there story.
catch em up guys

WOW what an awsome shot , thanks for reposting. I need a bigger reel to get that deep. professor always stated they were very interested in what they hear coming down to them. this is one reason bouncer has switched up the way he puts his bricks to create more noise as they drop to the bottom ?
just makes you think ?
