Default To Poon Or not to Poon

that is the question.

I have always used a gaff to bring in fish and never even threw or stuck a harpoon before.
Need to purchase a sword gaff and was told a poon is better.
not to clear on how that little arrow stays in the fish while you are pulling on it with any amount of pressure? should I just stick to what I have been used to( Gaff)
any opinions? thanks

My harpoon is like 12 feet long(2 pieces) and its attached to 100 ft of rope. when you hita fish you want to go all the way through the fish if you can, preferably in the head. The speartipcomes of the shaft and thats it. The spear allows you to aim and hit on top of the fish versus trying to get a gaff under it.Sometimes those fish don't really give you a shot with a gaff.Motoring your boat forward you can get a shot at it, while some wires it up. afteryou hit it they bleed pretty quick and the fish is done pull your rope and fish and get more baits in the water. If you need a spear call me 561-504-6515. The one I bought are commercial harpoon. 200+ tax. I got 2 in my truck.

the tip has a curve on it so that it lodges itself in, or thru the fish. swordslasher makes a real nice harpoon that is adjustable...you can send him a pm on here.

Hi justntime

just wanted to let you know that POON HARPOONS is the hands down favorite of big game fisherman up and down the eastern seaboard we have designed and built the most Corrosion proof , Rigid and weight forward Harpoon that is currently on the market
see for your self on our website www.poonharpoons.com check out the dealers page for a knowledgeable full service shop near you
in addition there are 100's of swordfisherman currently using our product with excellent results.

Cuurently we are offering a two piece unit that measures 10 feet overall and coming soon we will have a two piece unit that will measure 8 feet overall

to answer your question regarding how to hold the dart line to the handle we recommend that you use electrical tape to secure your dart line after pulling your dart tight to the point ,3 places is sufficient, once the fish has been stuck the tape just tears off and you are connected to the fish via The dart and dart line

Tight Lines

I am reading with great interest about harpoons. I have never used a harpoon before and wonder what the benefits really are. I have always used either a 6ft straight gaff or for big fish a flying gaff. What are the benefits to using a harpoon? At 8ft you only have 2ft extra reach over the 6ft gaffs. Are the harpoons being thrown at the fish? Does this cause any problems like hitting the fish in the body etc? If a fish is stubborn at the boat I have always been able to coax it in on the leader. I use 12ft of leader at the hook and a 20ft windon. That gives me the abillity to pull on a stubborn fish when the fish is 30ft away. Can a harpoon be thrown 30ft under the water?

Jerry ,Yes to throwing the Harpoon

I would say anything over 15-20 feet deep is a stretch as far as a good penetrating shot is concerned.

We have manufactured our POON with over 2 lbs of weight in the head for those deep shots.

the Idea of a Harpoon over a gaff is only to secure a large or unruley fish at boat side with one fluid movement downward versus the over and ,under and up thrust of a flyer.

there is a time and place for all implments

We regulary use a staright gaff as a secondary tool to get the fish in tight to pull aboard or position for tail roping.

also Keep in mind Harpoons are not IGFA Legal and should be used in accordance with laws and permiting in you area

Jerry if your thinking about getting a harpoon the POON one is the best on the market. Lots of weight and compact enough to stow easily.

Default Harpoons

I've often thought about making my own harpoon, has anyone done that, or does anyone have any tips?

poon I just read your post. I was looking for your harpoon, and lucky for me I ran into this forum, risk taker on the other forum was very nice he gave me the info on where to pick one up. I gather you are the one who makes these. I must say it is really nice the weight on the front makes it easier to poke the flesh with. I just got one this morning from Luies at blue marlin, he showed me how to use it, he has a box full of some type of foam he gets from a hospital he uses to demonstrate the harpoon felt real.

Harpoon is the way to go! I use the Swordslasher adjustable harpoon. It has killed quite a few fish for me and I won't leave the dock without it!

I have been out of the loop for a while due to personal health reasons and haven't been on the forum for a while. I make a harpoon that in my experience with using harpoons is absolutely the best. First the head is weighted for better water/fish penetration. the shaft is 2" longer then most other companies product. It is also adjustable to 5 position, not 1 or 2 set lengths. Therefore it can use for an in close or far away situation or changed in a second if the fish doesn't cooperate to meet your needs at the end of a battle. It can also be thrown at a fish if you have to.

Mike thanks for the good words, I am glad that my harpoon has not let you down. Lee from the Stalker Outfitter up in the Montauk area, Capt. Ed Dwyer, Capt. Cary Hanna, Capt. Ray Rosher, Tony 2ndChance, Joey ChummingwithChunk, Pat FinalPoint, Spindlebeak, Tim (Headfirst), Ron (Bandit on the SKA uses my gaff) all have one and as far as I know they use it and love it. Since developing it to the point I was happy with it last year I have sold over 150 units. I could have sold more, but due to health problems I haven't worked on it like I wanted to, but I am in the process of manufacturing more and like any product they are getting better all the time.

If you order one for an additional few dollars I can make it have a matching interchangable gaff head the other products out there can't do that. I know that when I fished with Tim (Headfirst) we tstuck a 150 lb swordie right through the eyes and lifted into the boat, Not bad.

I know that I have and use one of my proto-types and it had never let me down and with a simple washdown and oiling after each fishing trip it works perfect and will last for ever.

All the Harpoons out on the market are good, I hope you choose mine.
