Conventional Swordfish Tagging

My name is Eric Orbesen and I work in the highly migratory species biology branch for the National Marine Fisheries (NMFS), and part of my duties is to manage our Cooperative Tagging Center. I just wanted to see if I could solicit a few more people to tag their released swordfish. Last year we had a total of 163 swordfish tagged. 55 were caught by buoy gear, 72 by longline, 8 by handline, and 28 by rod and reel.
If you are interested in joining our tagging program please send an email to me Eric.Orbesen@noaa.gov. We provide tags to anglers free of charge. Our tags can be used on swordfish or any billfish or tuna species.

Perhaps this in inappropriate, but am I the only one disturbed that less than 20% of the fish were caught my recreational Rod 'n Reel guys?

most recs use billfish foundation taggs. not sure if they were counted in erics #s

That seems about right. Remember that average recreational sword anglers are only out there about once a week for half a night. And few have tags available. Whereas commercial buoy & handline vessels are fishing several times a week, from dusk to dawn, and longliners soak baits for several weeks per trip.

Eric... is tagging data shared between NMFS and TBF?

hahaha... Not quite! I think I stuck 7 swords total. When I visited the TBF office, they said there were a lot more people tagging fish in 2007 than previous years. I just happened to have one more than a bunch that had 6 tags to their credit. I think the top Captain was credited with 30-something tags.

The numbers given are the numbers for our program only (NMFS). TBF DOES share their data with us. Once a year TBF submits their data to us, and both datasets (NMFS and TBF) are used for peer review publications. If you currently use TBF tags I urge you to continue using them. I know there are many anglers who do not currently tag, and for those of you who do not want to purchase your tags we offer an opportunity to contribute to science without the cost.
