i think this website is great and all. but could you please keep the calls on the radio for "any forum members" to a minimum. it gets annoying. and alot of people dont know what it is.

I feel there could be a danger of Forum radio calls becoming too much.
However, after fishing Saturday and Sunday nights it seems far from abusive. I would guess there were 10 to 1 "Radio Checks" to Forum conversations and the Forum members seem to keep their talks short or go up one.

I don't agree that there is a problem now but I supose there is the potential.

Welcome to the Forum. I've been a member for a month and as a direct result have had sucess on three for four trips since joining. We feel like we have half a clue because of the Forum Memders we've met, info learned, the seminars and even the radio talk.

Welcome to the forum analeaser. I am not sure what night you are referring to, but I was out on Saturday night, and heard Mike on the radio maybe twice, and he went up to channel 74. I think the calls for Ron.38 special, asking if he is still on the fish every 2 minutes, can get annoying, but doesn't bother me. Ron, is very helpful, even told us what depth, what line, and what bait he used.

I think that this forum is great for all the guys that are getting into this forum. And to know that you have buddies out there doing the same thing you are is very comforting.

But what do I know.. I'm just a swordboat captain.

That's why I'm glad radios come with an off switch. Personally, I don't mind the chatter as much as the drunken idiots. Last year the two guys that were going to ram/shoot each other were a bit much.

Default Radio Chatter

I was out the other night with Bullfighter and I agree with him and the others. I did not feel that there was any radio abuse from any of the forum members. The radio is a way for people to communicate with each other while offshore. So use it. Let your friends that are out there know where the bite is, how deep the baits where set and what type of bait the swordfish ate.

I wasn't out Saturday night, but even on other busy nights I don't hear the abuse. On this subject though I am caught in between, I have been going out for almost 6years now and nobody has shared anything as to how deep, bait, #', etc. It has taken me all this time to get where I am at and I am very comfortable with the whole routine through my experience. There are also other guys I know that have over 30 years experience that have obtained a vast amount of knowledge, and to just give it away like a cheap hooker doesn't seem right.

But that is my opinion. I am a charter Captain and I would rather share my knowledge with you on my boat, nowhere else. For all you guys that are just starting out, do your homework, listen and learn what points seem to make sense to you. Do you know things like how much lead to use to get your bait down a true 300 feet when the current is over 3 knots? Or how much stretch mono has when you have over 300 yards paid out? Can you set your drags by hand without a drag scale? These are things you only get to know by going out and finding out for yourself. That is how you become a true Captain.

I think a good rule of thumb is too go up 2 channels if you are going to have a talk with a buddy.

Default Protocall for VHF radio use.

Analeaser- Welcome as a new member to the Swordfishing Central forum: I am also a new member to this forum. I have been perusing the posts in order to do my homework to learn better techniques for Swordfishing and exchanging dialogues. However, after seeing multiple posts from various members, I think that some of these posts are much more obnoxious than multiple hailing(s) for "Swordfishing Central forum Members" on the VHF.

Even repeated VHF calls for " people at large" is not inappropriate providing you wait a few minutes between calls and DO NOT step on a dialogue in progress, especially on HIGH POWER. For amateur band it happens all the time: CQ CQ CQ - seek you, etc. This is common practice to reach a person monitoring the channels but not necessarily transmitting.

In the Eastern Bahamas, I have heard on VHF 16, practically being used as a telephone. They will switch to a working channel, but sometimes need to be reminded to do so.

In the U.S. , VHF 16 is also the unified hailing frequency; however, communication should be switched as soon as possible to a preferred working channel. If you choose to use another channel as an alternate hailing channel for specific use, then it would also be preferred to switch to another alternate channel to continue two-way dialogue, BUT NOT 16, or certain other channels. Hailing to fellow fisherman, etc. is a common practice that will not go away: get used to it. But by all means make the right choices when talking on the VHF band. Remember to use LOW power when it will suffice for two way communication. This permits more communication on the same frequency in a given area. An FCC license is also required to transmit on the VHF Marine band; although, I do not knot know/recall any enforcement except for the problematic ones.

Analyze this, and good luck on your next swordie voyage. And may your next VHF communication be a pleasurable one.

Didn't we already cover this topic last month :?: Post new topics don't rehash old news. Maybe if you listen to the radio you will get some good info and catch a fish or 2 . Otherwise shut it off and fish alone.

i dont understand y everyone has to communicate so much out there and have to call in hookups i always try to ge on the 50 as long as posible depending on the drift and if someone says i got a bite on the 48 im not gonna pull up and run out come on guys. So u say u hooked a fish on the 100 squid im not gonna going to fish all 100 foot baits. The swordfish dont just decide im gonna stay at 100 foot tonight come on. i go to where i know where the fish are and i feel i got a good spread throughout the water colium and so far ive had great sucess but i guess it comes in handy to hear other people can catch fish too. Find the fish your self dont reley on other people for there info. I find it funny to hear some of the stuff out there like swordfishing trivia and all the other drunkin people out there if u dont like it change the channel. 8)
