I was wondering if it is feasible to fish for swordfish during the day with conventional tackle. I am in the process of building a Calstar RT180(5'1/2" unlimited class blank) with an aftco unibutt and aftco big foot SHD roller guides. I am going to put an Avet T-RX QUAD 50W/2-speed reel spooled with suffix braid.
My questions are: 1. Bent butt or traditional? 2. 100 or 200lb braid? (I'm gonna spool it all with braid) 3. I am building this is a universal rod for mostly fishing for big jewfish though since I do most of my fishing out of SW Florida. Can I successfully fish during the day with just one maybe two rods? I figure you don't have to cover the water column as much during the daytime.(?) I am fishing from a 20' scout with a 150 yammy, so I don't really feel comftorable going to the 50 line at night in unfamiliar waters. I will be down from July through September, so I will have enough time to catch some good weather windows. I have never really done "big game" fishing before and I am dying to get into it after catching pretty much every fish that swims within 50 miles of shore off the left coast. I trolled through most of the site today looking at rigging techniques and the like but didn't find much on daytime swording, i've only recently heard of it being done and figured it was my chance to try the billfish thing since I am on a very limited budget and time frame. Any help or advice to a noob is greatly appreciated. |

Lauderdale/Miami. Haven't decided which inlet to go out of yet, probably whichever's easiest to get bait at. Unless one is closer to better bottom on the 50. I haven't researched exact coordinates yet, probably just end up setting up on the 50 and seeing what happens.
How far off the bottom should you keep the rig? I know during the day you want it DEEP. |
