I'm a conservationist... I'm strictly catch 'n' release, really!

From what I understand, the Bahamian regs were concerned with "billfish". Swordfish were unfairly lumped into that category. They are NOT billfish!

out of curiosity, would everyone who caught one in the Bahamas be willing to report it to Fisheries, when, where, size, depth etc for data collection?

Since they are so readily available on our side of the stream, I wouldn't really be interested in killing one while in the Bahamas. But I would like the option of taking a really nice one or one for the locals. Since bottom fish limits are relatively low compared to the old 20lbs per person with almost no enforcement, swordfishing would be a good way to spend an evening after catching my limit of snapper. Last time I fished Gingerbreads (before the old new regs) we stopped fishing well before 11pm with a cooler of very nice yellowtail. It would have been nice to pull offshore and pop a swordy or three. |

I was looking at the bottom structure around the gingerbreads while fishing there in the wahoo challenge 2 weeks ago, looks like a really great place to try for a sword. Lots of real estate there between 1-3000ft with countours, plus it is a channel between there and Grand Bahama so as the swords come in from the Atlantic they will be concentrated a bit

I caught a sword off the isaacs. Only tried it once and we were lucky enough to get one. One of the coolest bites I have ever had while swording too. I was holding the leader in my hand while my friend put the weight on and a 100lber came from under the boat ripped the bait out of my hand and pulled out about 200 yards in 10 seconds. We fished all night and caught a nice variety. Shark, Shark, Shark...Wahoo...Dolphin....Shark. It was non stop action and we had a good time just had to weed through the by catch. We caught one sword, 20 sharks, one nice wahoo and three dolphin. Then at sunrise did a little bottom fishing and had a reel nice mixed bag when we returned. Unfortuneatly only did it once years ago right when I got bitten by the sword bug ...but I figure why go all that way when I can catch them right out front.
