Link to IGFA rules

http://www.igfa.org/BookRule2004.pdf

Direct from IGFA rulebook

If a rod holder is used and a fish strikes or takes the bait or
lure, the angler must remove the rod from the holder as quickly as
possible. The intent of this rule is that the angler shall strike and hook
the fish with the rod in hand.

Also rule 3 prevents you from resting the rod in holder, or against rail.

The following acts will disqualify a catch:
1. Failure to comply with equipment or angling regulations.
2. The act of persons other than the angler in touching any part
of the rod, reel, or line (including the double line) either bodily or
with any device, from the time a fish strikes or takes the bait or lure,
until the fish is either landed or released, or in giving any aid other
than that allowed in the rules and regulations. If an obstacle to the
passage of the line through the rod guides has to be removed from the
line, then the obstacle (whether chum, floatline, rubber band, or other
material) shall be held and cut free. Under no circumstances should
the line be held or touched by anyone other than the angler during this
process.
3. Resting the rod in a rod holder, on the gunwale of the boat,
or any other object while playing the fish

Also 130+ Jerry Brown "hollow core" & Spectra etc are not allowed for IGFA records from my understanding. I believe it is because your line can not be "attached" to a heavier backing, or test above 130lbs, and would need to be LEAD CORE backing etc.

FYI
As far as hooking the fish from the holder, same deal would apply for night drifting... you would have to pick it up.
As far as fighting the fish, well you would have to harness up. Amazing how all the those boats planned on fighting fish standup with those long bent butts. Mad props for you fighting that fish stand up for 7 hours on the long bent butt
And Braid IS igfa legal just has to be 130lb or less!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IGFA has a line class of 130 so Jerry Brown is IGFA legal to fish with. Last I heard, there are at least 2 pending igfa records using the 130# Jerry Brown. I'll see what came of that later.

For the catch to make the record books... the line used must be tested. But for everyone that is fighting their fish stand up... Jerry Brown is about to come out with a new line where the 130# will be as it is now and there will be an IGFA rated 130#.

Braided line is legal.

PS... good job to the winners. And there's not doubt in my mind that the intent of the rule is a released fish isn't one that is released into your fishbox

No doubt in my mind after talking to Scott either. We considered it a donation to Team Headfirst.....maybe I will get my Tervis Tumbler now
To be completely honest and I was telling Eric the same thing, after viewing the rules more closely we might not have been eligible anyway Next year need to go to the Capt Meeting.....well tell Nick about it when we get back

Actually the way they set up the "release" division with the disposable cameras was a great idea. I like the idea of a calcutta based upon the number of fish you catch in addition to division based on the size of the fish you catch and never saw a good way to do that. The disposable camera is great idea as it eliminates a lot of complications.

I would prefer something more along the lines of my interpretation of the rule leaving the ability to "release" the fish or keep the fish at the discretion of the crew but regardless..... picture = catch minus the fish you choose to weigh. With the picture being alive or dead. Would be a competitive calcutta, I would place more money on that bet than on big fish.

Either way it was a good tournament, suprised so few boats considering there was some ching for a minimal entry. Congrats again to Eric's Crew

We represented well!

Im just thinking of the SEVEN hour battle. Good thing E$ was on the rod, as there is NO way that I could ever do that. Certainly not our biggest catch, but it is one that wont be forgotten.

Professor O- I like your style & your always welcome to join us on the "Nothing Drift"
