Congrats Eric, Steve, Arthur, Seppo and crew.....we were hoping your fish was bigger just for "fishing" sake but a winner it was regardless........way to go

Arthur,

Technically, we won, but werent going to make a big deal about it.

Johnny and I were unable to go to kickoff party due to personal situations and they wouldnt let Nick attend becuase he was under 21. The rules stated in the brouchure that for a fish to count in the "release" division you had to touch the leader and take a picture of the fish, which we did for all three fish that we caught, it said nothing about releasing the fish alive or dead.

We "kept" the first fish for Mako....it seemed the obvious thing to do. We kept the 2nd fish because we thought it was over 57", it also got hung for da mako.....we could have easily taken a picture "releasing" both fish. We came home with one fish, "releasing" two....but technically with 3 catches that qualified in that division.

Not to mention......we had a 56" fish that was technically the third biggest fish in the tournament

Either way, congrats to the winners.

Johnny one of our releases was a 56.5 incher, thought about stepping on him to get the extra half inch

Ours was 56.6

I actually just got off the phone with Scott, the tournament director. He thought the rules were pretty clear and I understand where he is coming from.He said there were other boats that caught three fish and killed one so that didnt count for them either

I still dont think it is an unreasonable interpretation, but I am just going to let it go and come back next year to take the "release" division

I always thought if you killed the fish and it was in your boat you could not count it as a release. Lets say it comes in gut hooked dead, again if you let it go you released it, it counts as a release, if you put it in the boat for dinner it could not be counted as a release.

From a rules perspective, If you said you released all your fish you better not have one in the ice box. I just figured that was the way it is.

What a Blast !!!!

Johnny, sounds like you gave em hell.
(we were hoping he was HUGE, but you know how it goes)
Beerman, good to see you.

FYI I did a report in SFC report section w the story / details.

This was a strange tourney in that the rules only specified a couple of IGFA rules, and not a true IGFA event.

IE they spelled out, 30' max length on leader/ wind on, NO treble hooks etc, no electric reels but that was about it. The said the guys could deep drop w manual on braid & that's not IGFA from my understanding either.

We never brought the fish in the boat.....he got tail roped and his stomach slit open before he even met the crew of Controlled Slack.....he was then "released" at the end of the night.

It was our fault, our misinterpretation, and truthfully.....we should have just taken a picture of the fish, and then gutted him.

Johnny, w all due respect that is BULLSHIT.
A release is a fish that you un hook, photograph & release. If that fish winds up dead / gutted & you try to take release points you are cheating !!

I don't care if you try to justify it by saying you were using it for "bait" for Mako etc

I know you better than that & know you would not want to win any other way than fair & square.

Nick FYI there are no less than 3 IGFA rules you break w deep dropping swords. IE Hooking a fish from the rod holder will disqualify you for IGFA right there at the start, but it keeps going.

Link to IGFA rules

http://www.igfa.org/BookRule2004.pdf

Direct from IGFA rulebook

If a rod holder is used and a fish strikes or takes the bait or
lure, the angler must remove the rod from the holder as quickly as
possible. The intent of this rule is that the angler shall strike and hook
the fish with the rod in hand.

Also rule 3 prevents you from resting the rod in holder, or against rail.

The following acts will disqualify a catch:
1. Failure to comply with equipment or angling regulations.
2. The act of persons other than the angler in touching any part
of the rod, reel, or line (including the double line) either bodily or
with any device, from the time a fish strikes or takes the bait or lure,
until the fish is either landed or released, or in giving any aid other
than that allowed in the rules and regulations. If an obstacle to the
passage of the line through the rod guides has to be removed from the
line, then the obstacle (whether chum, floatline, rubber band, or other
material) shall be held and cut free. Under no circumstances should
the line be held or touched by anyone other than the angler during this
process.
3. Resting the rod in a rod holder, on the gunwale of the boat,
or any other object while playing the fish

Also 130+ Jerry Brown "hollow core" & Spectra etc are not allowed for IGFA records from my understanding. I believe it is because your line can not be "attached" to a heavier backing, or test above 130lbs, and would need to be LEAD CORE backing etc.

FYI

the 57" inch minimum. There were 3 places for releases and two
releases won those by time. One boat caught 3 fish under 57" but decided to keep some for dinner, missing the $2500 1st prize for releases; expensive dinner!!

I'm going to let E-$ tell the story; it was a honor to fish with these
guys; Capt Joe, E-$, DoradoSteve, Seppo, Lindus and his friend
Nick from LI. We netted over $15K and plaques for winning this leg
and the overall Grand Slam with biggest fish. A lot of pictures and
video was shot (but not by me) so I'm sure we'll see some pixs.

A big thanks to the organizers for another fun tournament.
cheers, arthur
