Default New Tournament Circle Hook Rules

As of Jan 01, 2007

According to NOAA this does not apply to swords. But that was how I read it.

So Long liners had to use circle hooks scince 2004.

It's a little unclear to me if you troll Plastic you can use a j hook. but if you troll a dead ballyhoo you need to use a circle.

Get ready for a huge sale on use J hooks on EBAY!

My understanding is that swordfish tournaments are exempt from being required to use circles. Artificial lures can still be used with j-hooks,but live or dead bait,or a combination such as skirt-ballyhoo requires the use of circle hooks in tournaments.

You can still use J-Hooks in lures because they are not "dropped back" like dead baits so the chances of a fish swallowing them are much less (on average). A ballyhoo rigged on a circle hook is dropped back and is meant to be swallowed, then when drag is applied it slowly moves forward and hooks the fish in the corner of the mouth (hopefully).

Swordfish tournaments are exempt from circle hooks.

True or False? Didn't the rule say all billfish tournaments? Someone please confirm.

Thanks,

It is my understanding that the new rule only pertains to tournaments, not individual fishing.

It states all billfish tournaments, but then says "swordfish tournaments are exempt from the use of circle hooks". I'll try and find the link for you.

In this months issue of Marlin Magazine (in the front section) it states this as well.

Good deal Broadbill,

Thanks for the Clearing it up for me. I spoke with Rick Peeples (founder of Islamorada and Miami Swordfish Tournaments) last night at the captains meeting for the Kevin memorial tourney out of Miami and He said the same thing. He stated that swords fall under the migratory species and they share the same rules that apply to tuna. Guess that is why everyone needs a permit. Good new for the folks that don't like to use circles for swords. Especially during Sword tourneys.

I have been wanting to try circle hooks for swordfishing, but I am not sure how to rig the squid with a circle hook.
I was thinking of using some floss to bridle the top of the mantle and tie it to the lower part of the circle hook. I would think that the squid would float very naturaly in the current, but the hook would be completely exposed. Any thoughts on a sword being spooked by seeing a big circle hook floating above his dinner ?
Any advice on rigging ?

HERE'S THE SCOOP---SHORT AND SWEET.
I called NOAA.
Sword tournaments ARE NOT affected.
Non-tournament fishing is not affected.

Keep 'em tight!
