Although I am not going to be able to fish this event, what weight on average is a 47" fork length fish? Also is a fish of that size mature enough to spawn at least once before being removed from the population? I am only asking because I do not know the answers to these questions, and for my own knowledge and ability to defend myself at the dock if I get the pleasure or chance to boat one someday.
It is not that I do not support tournaments; it is that I feel that any tournament should have minimum size limits that promote the fish's ability to reproduce at least one time during their life cycle. Especially when we as fishermen and women are targeting a species that is in the process of rebuilding it’s stalks from either environmental reasons, or over fishing commercially or in the name of sport. I am not trying to criticize or incite an argument I am just curious. While I know that the commercial fishing fleet may not be discriminative in what they kill all the time, it does not mean that we as a fishing community need not be either.

If you think about it, you would rather see pups killed than breeders. A pup can indeed grow into a breeder, but killed a breeder say 150+ plus in my opionion is worse than killing a pup.
a 47 inch fish is tiny.. range from 35 to 50 pounds. With these tournaments you cant plese everyone.. the tournament directors take alot of heat on both ends of the stick. I Like the 55 inch rules myself that I have seen the darkside of the moon enforce. Just my .02 |

Thank you for your opinion and insight on this matter.
I guess that I need to do some research on the subject and point that it is better to kill the future breeders, rather then the current breeders. The same philosophy is used in Nova Scotia for Atlantic salmon, and I have not yet totally embraced the concept. I guess that the philosophy is saying that these fish have survived the environment and fishing and are now ready to procreate, but wouldn’t size limits from a federal level, or better yet the sportfishing community (to keep the feds out of it and protect us from them) promote growth of the stocks by allowing the juveniles to grow to be able to reproduce? It is our fishery and our duty to protect ourselves through self-management. I cannot say what I will do when I am finally in the position of killing a juvenile fish because I have not made it to this accomplishment yet. I can say that I know that a picture will last forever and mounts are available in all sizes now, and the fillets will eventually be gone and a forgotten meal. I guess that is a bridge I will cross when I get there. Tight Lines
