The SAIL Fishing Club (www.sailfishingclub.com) is pleased to announce that the fund raising efforts to support the tagging of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) off the coast of South Florida are on schedule. The club has confirmed plans to work with Dr. Eric Prince of the NOAA NMFS Southeast Fisheries Science Center (www.sefsc.noaa.gov) to begin tagging fish in the spring of 2006. Each tagged fish will receive a “pop-up” satellite archival tag (PSAT) that will record water temperature, depth, and light-based location at thirty second intervals for a duration of 30-120 days.
The SAIL Fishing Club’s “Adopt-a-Swordfish” program has already raised over $600 through individual donations and the implementation of a 50/50 raffle at the regular club meetings. Future fund raising activities include a seminar/raffle/auction to be held on October 5, 2005 at the IGFA Museum in Dania Beach (featuring Capt. Ray Rosher), limited edition T-shirts from HotFish (www.hotfish.com) which will be available beginning at our September 14 meeting, and the Hydro Glow / SAIL Fishing Club Inaugural Adopt-a-Swordfish Tournament to be held on October 8, 2005 (weigh in to be held at the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club). We would like to thank those sponsors who have already committed to joining us in this effort: Adrian Gray Ande BlueMarlinChronicles.com Capt. Karl Gloeckner Capt. Ray Chasteen Capt. Ray Rosher Captain Mark's Products Chili's Crowder Rods Eagle Claw Hotfish Hydro Glow IGFA Keith Collins Lindgren-Pittman Mark Wilson Maui Jim Maxima Line Ocean Tec Outdoor Channel P&S Yacht Services Para Tech Power Pro Reel Pro Shop Saltwater Sportsman Magazine South Florida Sportfishing Magazine Tom's Custom Gaffs Tower Masters X-tools By joining with the SAIL Fishing Club, you too can learn more about the local swordfish population and help ensure that the stocks are healthy for future generations. |

Hey Reel Life:
I am not sure if I had a chance to meet you at the Swordlord's Captains meeting but this very same subject came up with someone I was speaking with... about SAIL fishing club fund raising for PSATs. Two Comments: Please give Bobby Boyle a call RJ Boyle studios: 1 - perhaps he would have interest to sponsor in the tournament. ( RJ Boyle Studios 1311 South Federal Hwy Deerfield Beach, FL 33441 (954)420-5001 www.rjboylestudios.com) 2 - As you may know, he is the president of the Southeast Swordfishing Club. This club has been acquiring some funds also for (PSAT) tagging. As I recall these things are quite expensive to deploy and there may not be sufficient funding to deploy another "1" yet. Perhaps, with some inter-club collaboration, one or additional ones could be deployed, soon than later. Just a thought to enable a win-win, so if it sounds good, that topic could be discussed at the next SESC club meeting. And if not perhaps a little bit of inter-club rivalry may stimulate a better turnout on donation $$$ dollars. Still a win-win. So give him a call. Will be there on Monday October 5. Also as an FYI: on Saturday October 3 there is also the: Hearings on new billfish rules South Florida hearing locations and dates are: Fort Pierce Library, 7-10 p.m., Sept. 20; Doubletree Grand Key Resort, Key West, 7-10 p.m., Sept. 21; and the African American Arts and Cultural Center Research Library, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 6:30-9 p.m., Saturday Oct. 3. The proposed rule is available online at http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms . The closing date to comment on the rule is Oct. 18. If you are as interested in generating $$$ for swordfishing tagging you make likely be equally interested or more to provide public comment on the Proposed Billfish Rules. See you here too. |

We will be posting more information on the Adopt A Swordfish tournament ASAP. The tournament is on October 8th (7pm-4am) and the Capt Mtg. is on Oct. 5th at IGFA Hall of Fame (7-10pm). There will be a huge Raffle and Auction taking place that night, so please regardless if you are fishing or not, make sure you attend (BTW: Guest speaker is Capt. Ray Rosher). Lots of great prizes to be won. The tournament is Heaviest Fish Weighed-In Wins 50-1st/30-2nd/20-3rd. But This is a non profit tournament with the remaining proceeds going towards the purchase of the Satellite Tags ($4K each) and all the information will be posted for everyone to use.
We are also looking forward to fishing some of the upcoming tournaments as well and don't want to take anything away from them or what they are trying to accomplish or promote. Good Job Everyone! If you have any questions you can call me (Steve) at 954-562-0051 or Capt. Ray Chasteen 954-588-5175 or e-mail ali_blanco@hotmail.com. This is a group effort and will continue on well after the tournament. We appreciate any and all club support. Looking forward to seeing everyone out on the sword grounds. Happy Swording and Good Luck! ![]() [img][/img]
