Marlin 2009 SwordLords Fishing Tournament

2009 SwordLords Fishing Tournament is scheduled for this Saturday July 11, 2009. Entry fee is $100 per boat, winner take all. No captain’s meeting will be held, contact Jeff at (954) 683-1560 with boat name and entry fee. Lines in at 7:00 p.m. Weigh-in is at the 15th Street boat ramp in Port Everglades. Scales close at 2:00 a.m. This is a rod and reel event, NO electric reels or buoy gear.
Due to circumstances, we apologize for the late announcement. This tournament will be held in Memory of William P. Hald “The Anchor Man”, one of the original SwordLords from the 70’s, my Dad.
I will also be competing in this year’s tournament. If I were to win I will be donating the winnings to have a party for all the participants.
Thank you and good luck.
Jeff

Last-minute deal... but the entry cost is sure tempting. Problem is the payout will be weak since there's a general lack of rec boats swordfishing nowadays.

But the Swordlords event must take place in order to maintain its "longest-running sword tournament" status!

bite was off last night all We ever hooked up was a shark. a storm came up on us about 11:30 so we pulled up and ran in. from what I could hear only one sword was caught and it was 47 inches. Jeff will have to tell us if he ever came in to scales. 9 boats total fished. ocean was pretty choppy.

Only fish caught by Weekend Bender and Turtle on another boat a Pursuit...sorry didnt get the captains name but Congrats to the three (they were on a small boat). The storm that came through was one of the worst I have been in. Within minutes it went from 2-4 to 2-7+ and blowin hard from the NNW.

the storm was sick, I heard a guy telling us it was bad , did not pick up on radar as rain was not that bad winds were 30+ made ocean a washing machine we picked up and ran at about 11:30 was a wet ride home for sure. hope all made it home safe as there were a few guys out there when we left still fishing.

Got caught in that storm as well. We heard you guys on the radio... We didn't manage a bite - out on the 49.5 and in to the 50. Current was up around 4 knots... Where were you guys?

I was just north of you, we pulled up due to rain we should have reset last night , but had issues with crew not feeling good me included. with only 9 guys out the majority stayed some what close.

Team National Powerboats won it with the only fish caught, a small 55lb fish. I was the Captain, and we fished my 2350 Pusuit with Bender and Turtle.

Turtle went to leader the fish and the hook pulled. The fish was literally swimming away and he went over the gunnels to the point that I could see the bottoms of his flippy floppies and he came back up with the tail of the fish in his hands and flipped it in the boat. Turtle, always an adventure...

We fished right up until the storm hit us out of no where. We thought we'd have about a good 45 minutes before we got hit but all of a sudden a gust of 60 degree air hit the boat and it was on! Horrible, wet, electrified ride back to the scales, but it's all good. Thanks to everyone who came out and fished, I hope everyone made it home safe! That storm was no joke.

Me, Cliff and Turtle fished as the National Power Boats team (where cliff works) cause Will and the rest of the Bonnie and Clyde guys are in Lucaya hunting tuna. Slow night, we got our only bite near the whole pack just to the inside of everyone, I think around the 50.4. We can thank the nasty storm for letting our pup hold up as the only fish weighed in @ 55lbs.

I reeled it in and Cliff was ready on the gaff. When we saw the fish boat side, we didn't know if she was legal so no gaff and only turtle to grab it to sling it over the gunnel. In a split second the hook came unglued and our fish was drifting away. Turtle chased it a few feet from midships down to the stern and grabbed the sword by the TAIL pulled her back, he got a hold of the bill and swung her in. I think I am renaming Turtle - El Gato because of his cat like reflexes. Easily one of the more crazy things I have seen fishing and only adds to the Legend of Turtle. She measured up and Karma came through for us. Very bumpy ride home but that's the dark side.

Fun night and we look forward to next years 10 year anniversary for swordlords. Thanks again to Cliff (Johnny Black) and Turtle for a memorable night.

Bluelight, lets go fishing one of these days.
