TJ (emijess) and I fished the '09 Summer Sword Slam last night. Very little action for us, but finally hooked into a good fish at 2:30am. 40 minutes later got the gaff in her as the hook fell out. It took nearly all of our strength to get the fish half over the gunnel. But then in a split second, the gaff ripped out and the full weight of the fish slipped out of TJ's grip on the bill... and our 70+ inch fish vanished... leaving only the stink of swordfish on the gunnel and a 6" bill slash in TJ's arm. I hope that damn fish dies horribly.

Nothing wrong with the gaff. The fish was just too heavy for our normal landing method - by the bill and 1 gaff. The gaff was buried in the side of the fish just above the left pectoral fin. Must have left a big hole when it ripped out.

Bill,
We heard about your bad luck while waiting at the weigh station (I was fishing with Patrick). Losing the fish was bad but I hope TJ's injury is minor (we didn't hear about that last night) and he gets better quickly. I'm sure you'll get a big one soon and the "stink" of the lost fish will be forgotten. Harry |

His slash wasn't deep, but enough to draw blood. But y'all know how infection-prone those kind of cuts can be. He's cleaned it a few times already. He'll know in a few days if it amounts to anything.

Sorry to hear that Bill. That is why I personally poon 95% of all fish I am harvesting, regardless of size. Don't really care what people think of me pooning a 50" fish, never had one pull of the dart yet. I'm not in the least telling you guys what to do, wasn't there and you guys know what you're doing, just stating my thinking.

Yeah... there's a lot of "should-haves". hahaha I should have brought my harpoon; we should have used a second gaff rather than grabbing the bill; we should have secured it and gotten a tail rope on her...etc. We had that fish half-way over the gunnel, and it just went bad in the blink of an eye.
It just proves that you haven't actually caught the fish until it's hanging from the scale! Last edited by Uncle Buck; 06-28-2009 at 06:07 PM.. |

Buck,
Sorry to hear that happen, I have lost a few at the boat , we simply prepare to poon every fish, last night we lost a big one also. thought it was the end of the night for sure, after hearing a 81 inch caught. Thank goodness for the Disco bait saving the day. big game baits put us in the game.

Well... we have an ironic bait story... I got some gorgeous monster squid from Tek just for the tournament. I spent hours rigging 'em up to perfection Friday night. But we only got 1 hit on 'em all night. So during our last set, TJ rigs up one of the smaller squid that I brought, which had probably been sitting in my freezer for at least 6 months. And sure enough, THAT's the one that got eaten.
He's never gonna let me live that one down.

Steve- There are no "great" one that got away stories. They all suck, this one just sucks worse since it meant that they got to watch their tournament winnings sink away and die.

Wow. I think an exorcism or something is needed here. Damn dude!!
I bet you guys have been playing it back in your minds since it happened. I guess its like when you get into a car wreck you see it in slow motion, you know whats gonna happen, but there aint shit you can do about it!!! That's when a guy like TURTLE would come in handy. I could see him jumping on its back and stabbing it 15 times in the head ![]() ![]() Your luck will turn...it has to.

hahaha... I may have jumped in with the gaff too if it was still there. But as soon as it fell back in I rushed to the gunnel digging the gaff deep in the water, but the fish was gone that quick. We never saw it again. I'm bringing my harpoon next time... and maybe some C4.
