It was a nasty ride over to the honey hole with sloppy 4-6 foot swells coming in from the north east. The only thing different this time was that we had decided to color the squids red because of everything we had heard on the internet. We got to our designated spot and started the long task of putting the bait on the bottom by dropping the rig to over 1,800 ft. of water. We set everything up and began to wait. My friend was at the wheel and made sure we were directly on top of the line, like you would do when you're deepdropping, therefore you have to be on the throttles at all times.
After about 5-7 min, we got our first hit of the day. The rod bent into the water and the fish began to pull dag. We cleared everything around us and prepared for a long fight. To our surprise, the fish began coming up to the surface from the cold, dark abyss after a short 5 minute fight. I don't know if hooking it through his eye had something to do with it. We started to bring up the line for another 20 minutes with a constant tug-a-war where he would take out 3 feet of line and I would bring back 5 feet. After enduring this for about 20 minutes he finally came up to the surface. My friend could not believe his eyes when he first saw this awesome looking fish, you see he was not a believer like I was in the daytime sword fishing off Miami. After admiring the fish on the surface for about 2 seconds we attempted to bring him out of this cold, harsh environment. After 3 attempts, the fish was over the gunnel and hit the deck with a loud thump. Wow, the colors were unbelievable. The top of the fish was a beautiful purple, blue and silver color. We estimated the fish being approx. 160-170lbs. with a length of just shy of 65 inches. This was an awesome fishing trip but most important of all, my son got back at the docks, just in time to finish his homework. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Outstanding !!
I sure would like to know the details of how you set up your terminal rigging. Breakaway wieghts or chicken rig dropper style ?? Feed us some sweet details (wieghts/leader length/lights/special prayers/type of beer/ etc.)

Congrats! I'll take a stab at a workable rig, tell me how close I am. From the bottom up:
break away weight, 10lbs or so tied directly to the hook leader to swivel, with light attatched 3lb weight above the light not to break away Drop to bottom, break weight off, power drift to stay on top of the rig in the current, like deep dropping, catch fish

You're warm.
There is going to be a Sword Fishing seminar on the 19th given by The Daytime master of them all, Mr. Bobby Boyle. He's going to give out many different techniques at this seminar. I'm going to assist, most likely I'll pick up some new ones to tweek my daytime sword fishing trips.

Chicken rig dropper is my term for the typical rig we use for deep dropping. Any type of rig with the weight on the bottom and a 3 way swivel and a leader w/ hook set a few feet above the wieght. Some call it the "fish finder" rig. We call it the "chicken rig" when used with multiple 3 ways and hooks for deep dropping. Why the "chicken rig" name .....damifiknow ? Now that you took the bait on my chicken rig and replied to the post....any details to be offered on the terminal rig ?
