Default long key report.. 9/01/07

sharks sharks sharks was the word of the night. very dissapointed
headed out about 6:30 to about 1200 ft, 27 miles out. fished for a bit, baits were getting crushed over and over. used red/purple squids and some gogs i caught the night before. every time we brought up the fish it was a shark. so we moved, 1400 ft. same deal sharks and more sharks. moved out to 1600-1800 ft canyon, the shark action was even hotter. owner of the boat wanted to keep 2 so i got to put some blood on the new harpoon. i love the poon now~! anyways. i think we gotta go out farther to 2400 ft or something like that. i tried to get some intel about depth before we went out and was told 1200-1800 but nada. cono! what a let down =( we went out prolly 33miles total offshore

caught 2 dolphin <8lbers>, 2 triple tail on the way back in the following morning.

Nice report Ivan. It's still fun to fight one every now and then. The fun is removing the hook!

The word Saturday night was SHARKS everywhere. We headed out of Homestead and were set up by sunset. We set a balloon at 300 feet and a tip rod at 200 feet. We figured that we would just drift from far south and see what happens. The night was flat calm. It was a beautiful evening. We bought a new sword light and were ready to put to use.... The bait fish around the light was incredible....

We drifted for about one hour with nothing. We checked our baits and regrouped. Within minutes the 300 foot balloon goes off... YUP... It BLEW UP.... scarring the crap out of everyone... We decided since we reeled up the line, we would change the baits.... We re-set and waited again....

Moonrise at 10:29... By 10:57 balloon goes off again and rod goes tight.... Well, bored as hell, I decide to start detailing the fight on the radio. Hell, there was nothing to do, I couldn't fish, I had to wait .... With every 10 minutes of fighting, in my mind the sword would get even fatter and grow several inches.

We went back and forth for one hour and 15 minutes. Everyone on the radio was wondering what we had. Someone suggested a 15 minute rule, no fish in 15 minutes cut the line.... (Sure...)

Finally, when the 100 foot mark came up, I had my gloves on and the gaff was ready. Finally we reach for the leader and bring up the largest shark I have ever seen. I have no idea what the heck it was .... It was HUGE well over 8 feet and estimated over 250 plus pounds. Took some quick pictures, (The cameras memory card ran out space so all we have are pic's of the fight and not the shark,,,,, ) and he was released.

We wasted over 1 1/2 hours of fishing time on what we thought was out first HUGE sword. We heard that someone else also released a hammerhead. If this was a shark tournament, we would have scored first place... Awesome fight, just wrong fish species...

I continue to chase the "elusive sword...."

Fish on....

Cool. You just gotta be careful because there are several species caught by swordfisherman (cuban night sharks, Caribbean Reef Sharks, bigeye threshers, and longfin makos) that are fully protected and are illegal to kill.

i didnt even have a chance, every single time we tried to leader a fish, he would start death rolling and just spin until he cut the line, there go 10 dollar jobu owners. I HATE GD SHARKS. STUPID THINGS! i did get a chance to warm up the harpoon though very cool, way funnier then gaffing.
