It is only legal to sell PACIFIC caught billfish (other than swordfish, which technically aren't billfish anyway) in US fish markets. I believe it is illegal to sell marlin in any US restaurant.

Right. Lower jaw fork length 99" (8.25 feet). Keep in mind that if you do decide to keep a marlin or sailfish, you are required to report all billfish landings to NOAA, not just swordfish.

Nice fish...but I definately would have released it.

I dont think that it is illegal, they have Marlin at the the Sushi Buffet off Powerline a little south of Palmetto in Boca. Or at least they did the last few times I went there.

It looks like that blue marlin gagged on what ever it ate. 99 out of a hunrded times that fish will die anyway. Blue marlin is incredible to eat. Sushi, Grilled, Fried what ever. I have never gaffed a marlin in my life but I have speared one and had 3 die while fighting. All were eatin. I think it rocks that you caught a nice blue and if it wasn't healthy enough to release, I hope you loined it out and gave what you didn't eat to some good friends.
There is no difference between Swordies, Marlin, Tuna or Groupers for that matter. If we rec. fisherman catch a fish and bring it home to eat we will never begin to dent the population. as long as we aren't scared to let what we don't need to eat loose.

Nice Fish!

I don't know where you came up with that conclusion...the hook is in the corner of the mouth and you can clearly see the bait outside of the mouth in the pic with the fish on the deck.

I've watched this thread develop...and have held my tongue..until now. In the old days if you caught a blue marlin you hung it up. You did it it to say " hey I caught one" or to advertise your charter boat. For the last 20 years it's been taboo to do that. While they may be good eating, in my opinion it's still taboo. The Blue Marlin is a noble fish. To catch one is an acomplishment and to be honest I've hung a couple up in money turnaments. So I'm guilty too. But I have to say that killing one is the last thing that will happen on my boat.I can't even imagine it. I think the guys who caught that fish got carried away in the moment...and they said as much. Cono to them. I don't think they will do it again. They had a great fight, caught a great fish, and made a little mistake. Let it rest.

in case anyone's wondering, I would have released it too, but kept it if it came up dead.

Nice fish, No law says that you can not kill one if of size, so they have all the right to kill it. Pretty work. I would have relased it, for I have no use for it. Just remember to call it in.

as long as there is a market for marlin in the USA, they will continue to kill them like that.

Thumbs down

Add one more the flack pile. Killing a marlin...for no reason is... well not for me. Not to sound like a tool, just expressing my view.
I released a 450 on 30 pound a few years ago and enjoyed my moment with him and watching him swim away.

Nice Fish!
That is not true at all. Differing life histories mean that, while recreational fisherman will probably not have a big effect on swordfish or tuna, then can and do make huge dents in the populations of fish like grouper and snapper.
