Default Flashing Squid

I was watching the TV last week and saw a documentarty on the Discovery Channel (or National Geographic ?) about the Humboldt Squids off Baja Mexico. The story was that they were accused of being "man eaters" because they grow very large and are very aggressive.
The underwater filming showed the squids attacking fish and other squids, pretty cool to see. But, the thing that caught my eye was that the squids would start "flashing" when they got excited. We have all seen them change colors for camoflauge, but these guys were actually lighting up and glowing in a regular time interval (say 1/2 to 1 second intervals).

The big question: I have heard of putting a light stick inside the squid to illuminate it. Has anyone placed one of those small, water activated white light flashers inside a squid. If so, is it bright enough to lite up the squid ?
I would guess the squid would get excited and start flashing when he sees a sword bearing down on him.
Or, is this flashing exclusive to the "Humboldt Squids" off Baja ?

Input would be appreciated.

Even if flasher is close to squid it will illuminate the squid with its flashes.

I've been wanting to try it with a red flasher since that seems to be their color.

Ray, I saw that as well, was a cool show. In regards to flashing lights, like QQ said, if the light (LP, SM, etc) is close enough, it's going to illuminate that squid. You should see some of the stuff we send down with our squids. I say if the idea pops in your head, you try it.

Have seen them on night dives and they are impressive. Similiar to a neon light they pulsate, and the bands of color run back and forth along the body.

How about in a salami strip?

Y'all overthink this sometimes. They're pigs. If they see it, they'll eat it.

I don't buy that one anymore, Mitch. I've had the chance to fish a couple sick boats this summer that had depth finders able to mark whatever swims under the boat. Many times when we marked a blob at 200, not a second later we were tight on the tip down that depth. But also many times we've marked the same thing and not got touched. One night back in June we had 4 fish swim through the light and right by the flat line. Not one even looked at it.

Woohoo, found the not hungry one. Or perhaps, something else.

Woohoo, found a whole bunch of them that weren't hungry. Or they knew you were on the boat and wanted to see if they could top your old 0-47 streak.

Broadbill Flashers

Attended Bouncer's Smiths seminar aweek or so ago, also went to his seminar last year, the big difference i noted from one year to the next was the use of flashing (i think its called) Mity lights in place of the glow stick at the snap swivel. Went out Wed night, all four rods with flashers. Had all four fish on the shallow tip rod, two of the four rods had red flashers. They didn't touch the jug rod with a red flasher. Go figure!. I certaintly believe they'll eat anything when their hungry, we seem to over complicate the game, but that's half the fun.
Tight Lines,

Just remember... for many many years before the Electrolume was developed, longliners only used green cyalume sticks, and just jammed a hook into a squid. That's about as simple as it gets.

Maybe were just complicating the matter... "If it ain't broke don't fix it...." Why not just a squid, a light and weight...

Why don't we just run around barefoot and naked and live in mud huts.... that has been working for the last 5,000 years ?

Not trying to offend anyone, "if it aint broke, dont fix it" is acceptable for most people. As for me, I am always looking for a way to do something better, why settle for good when you can try for best ?
That is how this great country was founded and became the greatest power in the world.

I want to have the technology to go to the moon, and drive fast cars, and....be more consistent in catching more and larger fish !!
