Sat we decided to take a friend of mine out for a little swordfishing expedition. The weather was great with seas in the middle of the gulf stream flat calm. At about 10:00 pm, the tip rod that was down 75 feet went off. My friend snapped his full harness onto the 50 wide and got ready for the fight. The sword came up right next to the boat and then found out quickly that he was going the wrong direction. Especially, after seeing me holding the harpoon and shinning a spot light on him. It was a give and take senario for about 20 min. The fish would take off 200-300 yards of line and Eliud had to gain the line back again. At about the 20 min mark, the sword started going around the boat for about 10 min. As soon as I got a clear shot on him, I sank the harpoon deep into the swords head and stunned him. We were 1 for 1 at that point with a 51" sword in the box.
After trying our luck out for an additional 2.5 hours the rain storms started closing in on us.. We ended the drift just north of Sunny Isles. The trip back was incredible. We were crusing at 35 mph with the radar on enjoying a beautifull ride back to the docks. Team Max'd Out is 5 for 5 on swords with five trips and five kills under it's belt.
Checking the weather out for our next swordfishing outing. Who knows, we might hook onto a 400# slob.
P.S. I did hear someone on the radio hooking onto a big sword and asking other boats to look out for him if he gets too close to another boat. But, he never came back on. I suspect he lost the fish.
