Weather looked nasty, and was, for most of the night. Trolled out about 6 PM and picked up a big bull on the way to the grounds.
Switched over to Swordfish lures as it got dark. We got a few knockdowns but nothing that said swordfish, could have been rats. I looked at the lures this morning and they showed signs of being wacked by bills. As we got to our sweet spot we set up for Drift. Released a small legal sword in the first hour, about 11:30 PM we were talking about bringing them in when we got big strike. Dumped ¼ spool on a 80W right off the bat. Put on a good fight, but when she came into the light she was a Hammerhead. Good 12 ft but not what we were looking for. Gave her the hook and a few ft. of leader to remember us by, and decided to pull them in and troll back. After an hour or so of trolling in and hearing about how large swordfish don’t hit trolled lures, yea you may get some rats, they don’t feed like marlin etc. etc. I’m just thinking, please big guy, help me out here, and then she hit. Ripped off half the spool on 80W, pegged to strike. She never stopped, we cleared the other lines and started to try to chase her down when she came unglued. Well that how it goes. Now the “big fish don’t hit trolled lures” is over, but I’m getting the old, “yea, but you can’t keep them hooked because they don’t swallow it like a drifted bait.” It’s OK brother, we will have to disprove that on another night. It was good night, with good friends, and we did some catching in some nasty conditions, it wasn’t a working night for me and I had a blast out there. Maybe next time we will boat the big one on the troll. I’ve caught plenty trolling but have yet to take pics of one over 200. I’ve got them, just no pics to prove it, and we all know how that goes. I now keep a camera with my swording gear so it’s just a matter of time.

That's what I was thinking when she hit.
You are right, I don't use the big boys until Oct. or unless I'm in tournaments, but I was on a buddies boat and all his gear. I only brought lures. He always fishes 130's and 80W's. He's hardcore and wants meat on the deck, and is always prepared for sea monsters. Best rigged boat I have ever seen. That fish would have dumped a 50W in the first 5 min. Johnny, soon brother, I swear.

Two words... Bahama Lure.
They work. But the rigging method is still a matter of debate. The Jurassic tournament at the end of July is offering a prize for the largest troll-caughht sword. We all have the technology. But we need the patience to implement it. Trolling DOES raise fish.

Stew, I tried the troll yesterday but it was a cabbage patch out there and well with big lures out it was a magnet scattered grass at night. Well we went 1/4 so it was a good night all in all just plagued with a few frustrating disasters of the night., nothing a sold crew that fished a few days together couldn’t solve..

Yea, that weed was messing with us too. I kept thinking that was what was popin the riggers, but when I looked at the lures the next morning I saw the bill marks. I also noticed my new swordy teaser I'm working on got bill wacked a few times also, and it was right next to the boat.
