We left port at 4pm with 3 goals: Deepdroping & trolling for swords, and be back early, as I had to be in Ft Myers in the morning for a meeting. 1st time ever trying deepdropping. I suck! Need to read more in the deepdrop forum, but at least got the Crystal 651 wet, very wet. It was not 2-4' as forcast stated
Started trolling around 8pm. We had 5 line spread 2 riggers, 2 flat line, 1 down the center real close to the boat. Lure colors were mostly dark accept 1 which was white & pink. We finally reached the area I wanted to explore just before 9pm when the right rigger goes down. Nothing there! I thought maybe it was a weed as we had seen some scattered weeds on the way out, but now it was too dark to see. so we reeled in to find no weeds. we also checked all other lines for weeds, and they were clear. So we tightened the outrigger clipps a bit more just to prevent false alarms and agreed to check baits for weeds periodically. About 9:30 right rigger pops off again, but this time starts screaming. (I found out after that the drag was up to over 30# while trolling when the fish hit) ( I did not mean to have it up so high, but it worked) I cleared all the rest of the lines as the rest of the crew backed out last minute leaving just me and my buddy. 20 min. later we have approx. 50" sword at the boat. The hook set was perfect, in the lower jaw on the first hook(this was a 2 hook rig, some lures, I rig with single hook). I tagged and released the fish as I still have some frozen.( 1st time setting a tag for me ) We send the spread out again with a couple different lures in the spread, and again the right rigger goes down again!!!! Nothing there, drop back a bit, still nothing. Send it back out, and again, Snap, right rigger. Finally it was past my bed time and I had to call it quits. Fun night with good results for exploring a new area (east of whistle bouy) with a kinda new method.Right rigger = pink&white Almost forgot, center lure(also pink & blue) ended up with very frayed leader. Never heard or saw anything though. Good luck to everyone going tonight

Thumper 235,
Nice job on the release. I am in the process of learning the troll for swords myself and from the reports on this forum, I am real excited on the possibilities for the method . I understand from those that have worked very hard to perfect this technique, (Nightfighter, catching), that it is a extremely exciting and productive way to go for the swords. I am really looking forward to putting my time in this summer in DARKSIDE TROLLING

Mneptune,
Thx, I learned what I know from Catching, and experimenting a bit with different techniques Throughout the spread. I have not really talked to Nightfighter about his tecniques as I understand they differ a bit from Catchings. Whatever technique you use, it will only work if you get out there and try it. Good luck to you.

Good work on the troll. I've been wanting to try for years but never had the balls to try.

Are the lures on top or are they weighted? And what speed are you at to trigger the hit. We fish so far off shore it might be worth trolling a little on the way in. Just not sure what's being used ect.
