The crew of the FOUL HOOKER was invited to fish the Northeast Fla Marlin Associations mini marlin and spring warm-up tourny aboard the Pez Vela. It was a amazing 2 night 1 1/2 day trip. Here is the story from Capt. Charles from another form.
We cleared the jetty's at sunset on a journey to win the nefma postponed spring warm-up two day tournament. We arrived in 1500ft about 10 miles south of east st Augustine at 2:00. Within a half hour of putting our sword lines out we had a good fish on. Dave of the "Foul Hooker" made short work of a keeper swordfish, but being that we would be fishing for two more days I decided to release it. I estimate that the fish was close to 100#s. After setting up again I went to sleep and didn't get up until I heard the sound of fish flopping on the deck. When I got up Dave and Ryan already had a few nice phins in the box and I saw several in the water. I think we pulled four or five with one over 25#s. The tournament officially started at seven so we were back to zero and targetting marlin. We trolled for hours with nothing great rips, weed lines, temp breaks but nothing biting. I finally found a pallet and seen fish. We pitched a bait over to it and immediately pulled in another nice phin. I saw about two hundred with several nice ones so we spun around again. We pitched two more baits and pulled them away from the small ones in hopes of getting the 60 pounder I saw to bite. We just missed the big one when Dave's bait got eaten by a nice phin. the mahi went 44lbs at the scale and was our largest of the trip. Immediately after that the lightning and rain chased us away from the honey hole. The rest of the day was slow with a few dolphin here and there. Keadie landed another nice fish around 3pm that went 40#s. We trolled endlessly without raising a blue from sunup to sundown. I never really have a lot of luck on the troll with that close after the full moon. I believe they feed aggressively at night. At sundown we set up for swords again about 10 miles south of were we got our hit last night. The current was still ripping 3.5 to 4.5knots. Sure enough about 11:15 we were within a mile of were we hooked up last night and the clicker started slowly sounding on out short tip rod. We let it eat for 15 seconds and Ryan reeled as fast as he could. Fish on and within two minutes we had the leader in hand and removed the LP light. As soon as we got the light off the fish saw the boat and took off. We originally thought it was a dink but after an hour it was time for the flying gaff. Ryan's sword went 128lbs at the josfc scale. Twenty minutes after getting set up again it was Keadies turn. She made short work of her fist sword and we took some pictures and turned it loose. We had one more strike at daybreak, but we could not hook it. Around eight o'clock it was flat calm with rain and lightning all around us. We trolled toward mayport and the coast guard started announcing gale force warnings every twenty minutes. Tired and aware of the weather we cut our marlin journey short and high speed trolled in. We caught a few cudas, another dolphin and a large turtle before we picked up and called it a day. Around Br the stormed and six foot seas slowed us down. I was glad we only had to battle rough seas for 25 miles and not eighty miles. All in all great trip and maybe a place in the tourney. Thanks Keadie, Ryan, and Dave. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
