Default Saturday Jan. 04 Report

What a night!

We began the trip by heading over to the bent range marker of gov cut to get some runners and a few herrings to toss to dolphin on the way out.

7 Of us took off into the deep blue, pounding 4-6ft seas in the 32 Luhrs Open.

By the time I setup the first drift and had all the lines in the water, a few of the crew was already feeling queezy. I knew I had to get some fish on.

We heard hannaman on the radio had already boated one and was fighting his 3rd.

Meanwhile, the fish were making me look like I didn't know what I was doing.. Slashing my squids and ripping the runners right off the hooks.

So I decided to put some smaller baits out and force these fish to swallow them. Sure enough the next drift consisterd of 2 fish boated and a hog of a fish lost right at the boat! I estimated it at a healthy 200lbs.

Tight Lines!

Nice night Mike, we fished in 1400 feet the whole time and the seas seemed like 6-8 feet, The sea anchor did its job last night and made it a little more comfortable on the drift as the bow was into the seas. We went 3 for 3 and boated 2, first fish was 69 pounds, 2nd fish we had leadered for over 5 minutes bent over the side and hanging on for life. He would not budge from about 8 feet under the boat and finally chaffed the 300 lb leader broke from rubbing against the botttom of the boat, that was a downer. Then our 3rd fish was on as we were fighting this 2nd one and we didn't know it. It was just a slow tick on the reel but I noticed the jug was gone, we reeled down tight and he was on. He took the 3 of us to get him to the boat taking turns on the pump and crank. We finally leadered him after a few jumps, when that stick came up we sunk the gaff and pulled up a head and shoulder shot that I knew was a big fish. I couldn't even lift this fish over the gunnel, it took the 3 of us all at once with everything we had and finally got him over. We went back to the docks and weighed our fish at 147 lbs. We were all exhausted and headed in to port somewhere after 8:30 pm. All our bites were on squid and down deep and hooked back in the roof of the mouth. We had an exceptional night.

Great night Cary. Hey Ken it was extremly rough last night, I think Hannaman called it right with 6-8. Hopefully it will calm down.

I gotta thank Hannaman and Ron.38 Special for some up to date tips. I got hannaman on the radio and he was doing great on the 49.. so I ventured out a bit deeper to get the bite. Ron.38 let me know which depth to fish my lines that has been succesful for him the prior night and it was gold.

I got to say that swordfish anglers are the toughest out there.. Everyone who said they were going out, DID. No one turned around or gave up early.

Nice Catches guys. I was also out there roughing it out in the big seas with some family down for the New Year.

As soon as I put the first line down to 400ft with a medium squid, it got inhaled and line was peeling off, I uped the drag to about 14lbs and my crew began to harness up to fight.

We fought this fish from 6:00 to 10:20, only to have the hooks pull! We decided to head in, since it was rough.

Next time!
