Default 4/3 Weekend Bender Report

I have been itching to get out to the swordgrounds and thanks to the wind finally giving us a reprieve, my wish was granted. I made the trip with Brian - Knot Proper and two friends that were rookies Bill and Chris. Turned out to be a very fun night with 2 cherries popped resulting in one legal fish kept (48inches), 1 just illegal fish released and 1 big angry shark released. Great to be back out there.
Headed out to calm seas and a pretty sunset. We trolled out for about 45 minutes and had one knock down with no results.

We got set up and caught a barely legal sword. It was the first one in the boat and on the menu.

Later released a pup.

Played with a shark

Back at the dock.

Ran into these guys in Quck Quack's tournament. They caught a 62 incher fatty. I gave them a reprint of the website that they slapped on her.

Fun night and glad to be able to get back out there.

Last question though, did the NOAA longliner research initiative get approved? I wasn't sure if it was the drift boat in the distance way off of PE with what looked like hundreds of lights on the surface stretching north from a large boat or if it was a longliner out there. I took a video but you can't see anything. I couldn't tell for sure. Tight lines.

Great job guys it was a great night out there. There seemed like a decent amout of bites just a lot of small fish.Did you anyone hear the guy on the radio that had a big shark try to eat his motor?

No LLers are still not allowed in and even if they are the area is North of Ft pierce.Could have been a buoy guy but not on a big boat?

If a LLer did fish out front you would not see anylights on the gear.

Probably just a bunch of boats off in the distance. I saw a lot of boats running SE past Delray while I was trolling in the late afternoon/evening. It made me a little sad... but I'd been fishing all day, so no big deal. It must have been a parking lot out there, huh?

I only counted around 16 or 17 boats. We started around the 26 even.

I counted 20 boats or so, we were a little south of the 26 until later near 11:00 pm. Drift started slightly in and then flattened out and was almost due north once we got into the 50.5 area. 1 for 4, released a small fish. Fought a very large one for awhile who ate a bait out of our hands when checking Mr. Tiprod. All bites were on runners, next to the boat, no deeper than 150' down. Early bite was offshore for us, later we had nonstop action inside the 50 line. no tinkers sighted. good luck tonight.

Yeah I heard the guy on the radio about the huge shark trying to eat his motors. That was wild. As far as my long liner thing, I saw what looked like one boat probably 3 miles away from where I was which was about 18 off of pe at that point in my drift. They were further east of me probably at 20ish off with a long string of only blue lights behind it on the surface. It was about 10:30pm. Brian - Knot Proper and I checked it out and couldn't figure out what it was. It looked like the blue lights on the surface ran for quite a distance. Maybe Brian can add to what we saw. It either looked like a whole new technique that I am not aware of or an amazing coincidence of blue lights flashing in the distance. Odd. I remembered hearing about the Longliner initiative and just didn't know ultimately what it was.

I do not know what kind of shark it was. If it was a bull shark it should have been fatter for its length. I think it was a silky. I blew the pic up so maybe someone elese can tell what kind of shark. It had a light brown to copper color and was about 7 feet long.
