Default Key West Sword Trip 3/3/07

Went out Saturday in gorgeous weather.

At sunset our biggest problem was getting the baits away from the boat. Absolutely no wind.

Started fishing in 300 fathoms west of the West Crack. Found lots of small tinkers but no hits.

Due to the lack of wind we drifted NE which required a move to reset in deeper water every 2 hours or so. No bait or action from the west crack to the middle crack, but a little more than halfway to the east crack we caught a large mackerel for bait along with our live blue runners with still no hits.

Reset again at 0130 and only had dead bait. We caught a 52" fish on the dead mackerel in 1700' of water on our 200' bait.

Slow again until 0601 when we hooked a 58" er in 850' of water on our 75' bait: another dead mackerel but a smaller old one from the freezer.

Another small mackerel at 250' was stolen by a sword in 900' of water.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening.

No, I did not try any squid this trip.

I had been using them all along, but whenever we had live bait, the squid seldom got hit.

Of course, this time when I did not defrost any squid, the live tinkers were hard to find.

Did I understand from your post that the 58" fish caught at 0601, was caught at 6:01 am in the morning???? You guys pulled an all-nighter??? If so, interesting that the fish hit only about an hour before the the sun came up.

You are correct. We fished all night as we usually do.

An hour before sunrise has always been my most productive hour for most big game fish. Except for swordfishing, I always start trolling an hour before sunrise in the Canyons of New England.

I'll bet that you could leave port at 0400 and catch swords by 0800 on a regular basis. The only thing missing is the opportunity of a longer fishing time that you get leaving prior to sunset due to the absolute end shortly after the sun comes uop in the morning.

It would be good for all the morning people out there who can't stay awake past 9 PM, but are rolling at 4 AM

Capt. Art:

Is the entire length of Wood's Wall good for swords or only the cracks?Meaning that if I am fishing at the Tail End Buoy can I just run south to the west end of the Wall for some sets or are the cracks the best bets?

I have been stoked about trying to fish the Wall for swords for a long time. Never done it though I've trolled and live baited there many times for wahoo and dolphin.

Keep up the good work!!

The entire wall is good. The cracks are like mini NE canyons but not nearly as large. They make a good reference point for describing where I was to someone else without using Lat/Longs.

If I were fishing at Tail End Buoy, that's exactly what I woudl do.

Thanks Cap. Yeah, I do most of my fishing west.....west of the Tail End, South of Rebecca. That's why instead of having to run back east to the cracks, I'd rather go south even though the wall is not as pronounced there. I am sure there's not much pressure there. I'll let ya know when I am heading down, likely next month. I launch at Oceanside.

Tight lines...

Hey Juan:

I am 5 minutes from Oceanside.

There is actually more pressure from the longliners there as it is an open area west of 81 47

But there is some great spots there to fish.

Default West of Key West

You have the Marquesa Trench and Way West Crack out there that are pretty good as well.

Check them out on the charts.
