I was out dragging some lures yesterday morning and I heard from another capt. that they caught a 150# sword while kite fishing for sails in 130 ft. of water. I have heard this story before - I wonder if its becoming more common.
I have heard of the keys capt.s targeting them during the day - has anyone tried this here? If so, what depth of water and how deep do you fish the baits? R

I saw a boat pitching baits to a sunning sword about 2 years ago off of Boynton. Think it was less than 300ft of water.
There was another story about a year ago... A couple guys kingfishing north of Boca on a flats boat hooked into a sword with 12lb test. Fought it for about an hour, got it near the boat, but the leader gave way just outside of gaff range. The only problem with catching swords unexpectedly while fishing nearshore, is it's most likely illegal for folks to kill 'em. Unless they also target tuna or swords, most anglers don't have HMS permits for their boats. Even boats that target sailfish or marlin don't need the permit unless they plan to keep 'em... which is highly discouraged anyway. |

I will put one in the boat during the day on the North nothing drift before the end of summer. I know it can be done..

Everyone seems to forget the first commerical swords were (and still are esp in Pacific) all harpooned on the surface during the day.
They dont mind the daylight one bit. In the old days just about every sword caught on rod and reel was baited with a large squid pulled in front of a sunning swordfish. |
