Default Liquid Gold Sword Report 1/17

I know I have been absent lately but it was becuase we have been real busy out on the water! These last two week we have fished almost every day mostly sail trips due to the weather. Fishing has been everywhere from good to bad having as many a 7 sails and as few as none...and of course a few kings and mahi to mix things up a little bit. But we definately had the highlight of the last two weeks of fishing tonight with the Stew Hitchner charter from NJ.
We were a little worried about not getting Stew and his friend Doug out fishing so we decided to hit the reefs a little since sailfishing has been so slow for most these last couple of days! It was really red hot but we put a few fish in the boat including a nice red grouper, a few yellowtails and a surpise hog snapper!
It was getting later in the afternoon and we decided to push offshore to find that conditions were very nice in the stream. we set the final line around 6:30 and at 6:47 we got our first bite on the tip rod. Doug set up in the harness and after a 15 minute battle a fat 58" sword came in the boat! 1/1!!! Just as the last picture was being taken I picked my head up to notice a little more pressure than normal on one of the 3 lines we were able to keep out while we fought that first fish. I cranked on it and we were tight on a decent fish that started ripping drag. Stew settled in and started working the fish with a good bit of drag. After 20 minutes we got a glimpse of a nice fat swordy! another 20 minutes later the fish was boatside and Doug planted the poon and I secured the gaff and we hoisted a nice 78" fish in the boat, 2/2!! My watch read 8:00 PM and as we heard the wind starting to pick up Stew and Doug decided that we should head in and prep the fish for their trips home!
Length and girth put the fish at around 230lbs.

Thats all for now!
Capt. Justin

First fish is a black margate , strawbery grouper ,gray triggerfish sand tilefish and a hog snapper which is not easy to catch on hook and line ... but great job on your swords !

I am not sure I usually release them also ... just know that I am on sand bottom and have to move to find better bottom for snappers and groupers ..probably are good for bait !I Agree with you .. love golden tiles ... better eating then Mahi- mahi heard you get them very big in NJ ...

Thanks for a great trip Justin. Had a lot of fun catching the variety of bottom fish. As usual you put us on some nice swords. Too tired to cook them up today, looking foward to fresh sword on grill tommorow.

miami, we find our biggest ones in pockets of mud bottom that are too small for tilefish longline boats to drop their gear on.. shorter drifts but they're more productive. i know several guys who have caught fish to 70lbs on electrics..

we're lucky in that on good days we can drop down 500-600 feet with 80# suffix braid and 16 oz of weight. a bad day is 48oz..

here are our two biggest so far..just over and just under 45lbs.

Those are awsome tiles .. I use 50lbs power-pro on my rig ... I drop a little deeper then you do, in shallow I only find small tiles .(5lbs).. but now that you say you get them in pockets of mud ... I have marked those ... I`m going to try dropping there and see what happens ...on the recorder it looks like big craters ... maybe a can snag a large one I use weight s as light as 16oz... but in much deeper water + current 3lbs... are the large tiles good eating ?

Yes the big ones are good, but I think most serious tilefish eating folks prefer 5-15lb fish! just like most, they get a little tougher when they are larger!

Justin , that is my thinking also ... I do prefer the small ones .. but sure would like to catch one in the 45lb class or larger manually
