Default January's Swordfishing report

Since my last report the weather took a change for the better and we were fishing all over the place. We did at least 4 trips Swordfishing and about the same with day trips targeting Sailfish.
On the 16th Adam Hoffman's crew of 4 came aboard to go Swordfishing. We had a great night putting 2 in the boat with the larger one weighing about 150 lbs. We had our shot at another one that was a bit larger than our big fish but we pulled the hook. The bite came without notice as I looked at the tip rod and the line was slack. The Swordfish was already on the surface in front of the bow of the boat. We came tight and I thought we were hooked solid as my angler was pinned to the side of the boat with the rod bent over the gunnel. The fish made one more run and we came unglued. The leader came back all twisted on itself like a bimini knot. Took that leader off and put on a much needed fresh one.

A couple days later we were doing a double, fishing the morning and the afternoon with 2 parties. On the morning trip we had no current, sun was blaring, and we basically were not in the bite. The afternoon changed 100% as the winds picked up from the north and we had Sailfish all around us. Almost every boat was catching them. We even had them free jumping within 50 feet of the boat.

We did a few more Swordfishing trips this past week and the action was still hot. There were alot more average fish caught this week with a few real nice ones always mixed in. We went 3 for 3 one night, all between 58 and 48 inches lower jaw fork length caught by George and his son on their first ever fishing trip together. By the time they touched the dock they had become fine fisherman.

Then this past Tuesday James Nichalous was busy all night with Swordfish. We caught 4 out of 6 Swordfish. We kept one weighing a good 100 pounds and released all the others. Just a note that some nights releasing fish all goes well as they kick off strongly. But then on other nights they get all foul hooked and you don't know how well they survive after being released.

As I write this report we are getting a real nice cold front coming through with temps in the low 50's. We are booked in the morning and afternoon tomorrow and I'm counting on the Sail bite to be going off. This coming weekend is the Mayors Cup Sailfish tournament. I'm sure it will do real well.

Till next tide,
Captain Cary Hanna
