went out wendsday night on bluewater25's boat.
lines in the water around 6:30. we were trying a new buoy system and had some complications with tangled lines and what not. also the drift was REALLY fast so we had to add extra weight. Finally get the spread out about an hour into the drift the 150 buoy rod starts screaming. bluewater25 grabs the rod and gets tight. i clear the lines and get the poon ready. blue makes quick work of the fish and gets it in the boat in @ 35 min. she jumped next to the boat and 5 min later i stick him with the poon. with the flyer and the poon stuck in we pull her in the boat. at this point she had been siting dead (so we thought) in the water for about two min with out moving. SSOOO.... we pull her in the boat and what do you know she came back to life FLIPPING out every where. luckly i still had her by the bill and could 'somewhat' control it. blue jumps on the body and i slit the throat. FINIALLY dead. tapes out just at 65" which is the biggest one for us yet!!!! couldnt find a scale to weight it but im guessing about 160# what do you think? the formula only puts it at 111# (65" X 37" ) but i think we messed up the girth measurement after too many Pictures to follow soon....im having some problems with my computer. JAKE CAN YOU POST SOME????

here are the pics. I think the fish is over the 110 pound mark. she was very fat and the girth had to be over 37''

no she was not a pumpkin. the meat was almost a light pink, but not pumpkin.
a great part about it is i left this morning (the next day after we caught it) and headed home to the tampa area and hooked all the family and friends up with fresh sword steaks. needless to say they are all happy to see me now!!

Hey that's a great lookin fish. The way ya'll are holding it, it looks heavvvvy! But by the measurements, I'd say it was a true 120-pounder. A great catch!

no problem Kris. i gave the guy at the "top secret hotel" some steaks so we are all good for ice when ever we need it. i started to stock my freezer up also but jake and i go so often, and the hotel is so close to the house that i just go before the trip and fill up. i need to take you up there with me one day and introduce you to the connection guy and let you make the same deal with him that i did. now that he sees im not yanking his chain i think we could get you free ice when ever you want also.
so how much more ice do i owe you in return for you helping me make my new sword rod when i get back into town? also i gotta show you had to make those wind on leaders again. id love to say that one we made caught this fish but it was a store bought one. next opportunity with the weather we need to get the four of us out there together (you me jake and chris). ill be over monday night to start the rod if thats cool with you and the wife

No problem Jason and nice head shot with the dart on that fish! We'll definitely have to put a trip together real quick.
Monday won't work for the rod, I'm on kid patrol while my wife is taking care of her Mom (she's having surgery on Monday AM). Give me a call and we'll set something up later in the week when thigns slow down a bit.

i stuck the dart in the fish's right gill plate and it exited just under the left gill plate. ill tell you what man. that was the first time that we have really had a fish go ballistic in the boat. dont get me wrong they all flip out but this thing went nuts. its tail smashed the shit out o jakes toe, broke two led lights and a courtesy light up underneath the gunnel. even after i cut its throat out it didnt give up for a good 30 seconds. but whats weired is it took us a good min or two to get the flyer out, gloves for jake, and so on. tryed to pull it up once and got half way up when i cut my hand on the bill. Droped him back in, restuck the flyer, put on another glove and finally pulled him in..THIS WHOLE TIME HE DIDNT MOVE he didnt even flinch when we re-stuck the flyer. but once he got onto the boat he flipped shit. could he have just been stuned from me hitting him with the dart. and then came out of shock as a result of being pulled out of the water? i didnt hit his heart but i took out alot of his gills on both sdes. all i know is if he had flipped like that when we were pulling him in i would probably had gone to the hosital for some nice stiches across my face cause the bill was right at face level

Snook,
I learned this move from FlatfishB recently. As soon as you're dragging it over the gunnel, bend its bill back towards its tail, forming a "letter C" out of the fish. It won't budge an inch. It's normally done within 3 minutes. The pic below is also in the gallery section and you can see better what I'm explaining... Last edited by swordstalker; 01-26-2007 at 04:19 PM.. |
