Default report 1/23

Got a call tuesday morning from Steph saying weather doesn't look good so I didn't pack the car before I headed to work. As the day went on the weather looked good and he says let's go. I was swamped at work and could not get home to get gear so he says I'll get everything and just show up. They waited patiently at the boat for me to arrive at 4:45 as they were ready at 4 (very nice of them) The night was considerably slow for us as we waited almost 2 hours with nada. All of a sudden we notice a huge pod of balled up bait(think they were sardines????) under the swordlight. I never usually fish a flatline but decide I'm going to as the situation seemed fishy to me. I was working it for about 5 minutes bringing it in and out of the edge of the light. Steph and doc were up in the front. Steph says I see a light on top and I said I put a line on top and sits back down. 1 minute later as I'm working line back in, I feel a tug, I say " I have a fish playing with the bait" and they both came to attention! 3 minutes go by playing cat and mouse until I finally get him to swallow. Waited patiently for him to take it down and tighten the drag and set,,,,,FISH ON!!! We saddled doc up and about 40 minutes later Steph sinks the poon in him. Tapped out just over 60" we had one other shot and never came tight and headed home. A lot slower than the other night but was nice hand feeding the second fish in 2 trips. Thanks to the boys that waited and allowed we to show up empty handed!!!!

Broadbill Cat and Mouse

Right on. Had some of that same cat and mouse stuff goin on last night. This cat didn't get the mouse, but experienced the same kind of tom foolery w/ the surface baits. No bait shoals last night though. Was a fishy zone, when we pulled up on the #'s there were 3 bouy guys workin the area We just missed ours. Thanks for the report.

cool trip.

good friends/crew are a gem. I show up to my friends boat sometime empty handed in the same situation from work. I glady return the favor when I can.

Sounds like we should be looking for the bait out there...

Not worried about the weather. Was worried about the rumors that lay-offs
were going to happen that day. The rumors were true...I survived, but Doc
didn't (after 25+ years of service). I knew I had to get him out and strapped onto a fish to cheer him up.

Thank Doc, he took care of everything, since I was running late, because of
meetings discussing The Co. new direction

I know I'm not the story teller and rarely report anymore, but come on, you left out the best part of the story!!!

...Before the hook-up, we had a live 2-3 pound mullet on the tip rod. We brought it up to check it and the leader was all tangled up. I untangled the mess (took awhile), tossed the mullet as he was dead by the time I cleaned everything up. Told Darren to put it back down with squid...10 min later we hooked up on the 61 incher. What's interesting is what I found later at the fillet table...first I see a peice of leader coming out of its mouth??
I say: "but but, I got my hook back?? WTF is this??" I reach down its throat and there's a hook attached! Once, i fillet the fish I decided to see what this Bad Boy's been eating...squidy squidy and then fish, large fish, no F%^$ WAY, the mullet I tossed!!!
That fish was def hungry!!!

Wasn't the best shot, but that fish was still lively and wouldn't come to the surface. It did stop em dead in its tracks though...

Thanks Eric, Doc is a great guy and a good friend. He actually got me hooked on a different kind of Darkside about 2 years ago...Gator hunting on his airboat...about a year ago I got him hooked to "our Darkside" and He loves it!!!
