Broadbill 12/23 Hot Bite!

Went out with my brother-in-law and his nephew. Their first time out swordfishing down from Pittsburg.

Left Haulover and caught some runners along the beach by Newport Pier and then headed out to the 49 line.

Got setup by dark and as I got all the jug baits out. As I am putting the tip rod down, the deep jug bait starts to sing!

I get on the fish, and hand it to Bill. He is fighting the fish out of the bow and we are clearing the other jug baits for him.

As we get clear, the tip rod around 30 feet gets nailed too. I get on it and we are on 2 fish now solid.

I put his newphew in the harness and the fight is on both fish. One off the bow and one off the stern.

45 minutes later the tip rod fish is in the light, I grab the leader and sink the gaff and haul her overboard. Fish taped at 64 inches.

Meanwhile the fish Bill is on, is still pissed an burning line in periods. We would gain and then it would rip off 50 yards like nothing. Finally we feel a thump and the line goes slack... reel up the rig to find the hook missing and leader all frayed up... must of been a shark.

About 9PM now so we put out the baits again, all squids and get another bite around 10:30... fish taped at 51 inches and we released it.

Decided to head in with a nice one in the bow of the boat
