Ok boyz it did not lay down, still was easy 4-6 and 6-8 in the stream, anyway on the way out good times with the fanily but my aunt was
![]() made it to the grounds and we set up and Bob put the first one in the boat 46 inches tried to tell the Cap it will strech once it is dead but back it went more tp drink and then Bob hooks up again this one measured 45 inches No other action for a while so Cap decides to move, re-set well this time my 80W is bending not taking any drag , float still floating did not pop off but a lot of pressure decide to start reeling, and reeling still lots of pressure decide yes we have a fish on yhrn fish decides OH I am Hooked quickly dumps half the spool ( at 20 #'s of drag) everyone clears all lines and I make my way to the pulpit get up there and the fight is on, crushing through the waves getting soaked in the process but still this fish, this goes on for about 90 minutes all stand up with a 80W no chair and not out of the rod holder, we see the fish, it is a shark keep cranking because it hit one of my cable lines so it is not coming off then we get a good look at it 10 foot + Mako all around the boat mate sticks a huge gaff in it and that breaks rope flying over the rail, mate crushed against the rail trying to hold on, rope runs out I get planted against the rail back down on the drag and fish is heading to the islands and pop goes the whistle it is over. All in all great night again on the Catch My Drift, did not land it but we leadered it and gaffed my first Mako Cap estimated 450+ not a bad night.Sorry but no pictures forgot Camera at home Will be out again tomorrow chumming hard to get another shoot at the wildest shark I have ever caught Shit it is 5:30am going to bed will check back in the PM

Catching:
I would not be very proud of advertising the fact that you caught a 46' fish and were trying to talk the mate into keeping it because it would stretch an inch when dead! If this is true it is an extremely sad state of affairs all around that a member of this forum would actually make such a ridiculous statement! When I have been out with others we have taken small BUT ALWAYS LEGAL fish (as we do value the meat and eat it), however if it is not CLEARLY OVER (and I mean at least several inches over AT THE VERY LEAST), back it goes right away. Also, we NEVER EVER would dream of gaffing a fish that clearly is not way over! I hope you guys did not gaff that Baby did you???????? Anyway, I have been hearing about this headboat thing and believe it may be a disaster waiting to happen if someone gets a LARGE swordfish! With all those lines out I would think when it runs, (and most of those big guys run strong and fast), it would be a cluster with all those lines out at once and i strongly doubt that you all would be able to get it?! P.S. CATCHING: FROM READING YOUR POSTS I HAVE NOTICED SOMETHING: IS IT JUST ME OR DO "ALL" YOUR "BOATED SWORD FISH" SEEM TO BE BARELY LEGAL? FUNNY THING IS YOU SAY YOU USE 80'S (WITH 20 + POUNDS DRAG) AND SPEAK ABOUT FIGHTS WELL OVER AN HOUR AT TIMES?! I LOOK AT YOUR PICTURES AND THOSE FISH ARE LIKE ALL BARELY LEGAL WITH ONE OR TWO SMALL/MEDIUM?! BILLFISHER |

I think you cant read into the humor of the statement ... never in his wildest dreams would he keep the fish. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ "Also, we NEVER EVER would dream of gaffing a fish that clearly is not way over! Just my thoughts on an undeserved reply. Ray

Yes, I thought it was a joke but gave back a bit of sarcasm with my cynical tone. Anyway, here's the "MAJOR ISSUE" which is SERIOUS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO ADDRESS: I think these BIG headboats are not doing justice to this kind of fishing at ALL!!!!!!! First off they are only going 10 miles out and are CLEARLY targeting and getting ONLY PUPS 99% of the time! They do this because they get $100 + a head times 11+ people! Forget about the $$$ thing though, because that is not the emphasis of my reply post. These headboats do not give a rats ass about the species or slaughtering pup after pup!! Let's be honest. Who thinks catching and boating "Pups" like this results in a "healthy release"?!?! An 85' boat with sides probably 4-8ft high and a rail 4' on top of that. They are most likely killing "EVERY" PUP they haul up unless they can haul a 50-60# fish thrashing, (dead weight on the rod), that high?!?! That simply is not happening! Even if they could tail loop a pup (without gaffing it), those pups are VERY tender and I mean "VERY TENDER"! Even on the VERY low to the water boat I often go out on, with a few guys grabbing a pup gingerly and literally with "kid gloves" so we could JUST SIMPLY TAKE THE HOOK OUT, some of these pups do not make it!!! They should rename that BIG headboat "Baby Killer"! If you think what i am saying is Harsh please think locially about what I am saying with the logistics of taking a tender pup up that high into a LARGE TALL BOAT to measure, dislodge a hook, and then set back into the ocean. Keep in mind that there is ALSO NO CHANCE OF TRYING TO REVIVE THIS HIGHLY TRAUMATIZED FISH FROM THIS TALL HEADBOAT (EVEN IF YOU DID NOT GAFF IT), BY TRYING TO SPLISH WATER INTO ITS GILLS GUIDING IT BACK AND FORTH INTO THE WATER WITH YOUR HANDS AS YOU CAN DO WITH A BOAT LOW TO THE WATER. This is what is truly sad!!!!!!!!!!! Now as far as the POTENTIALLY BIG FISH: Get the fish to the side, lower the loooong flying gaff, gaff the fish and haul it up the 8-12' over the rail. Not going to happen unless they have some fancy winch system which I'm pretty sure they do not. They will not get a REAL big fish with that setup period! AT LEAST THE THE BIG FISH WILL GET OFF THOUGH AND LIVE, UNLIKE THE PUP SLAUGHTERING GENOCIDE GOING ON! This is the TRULY REAL SAD THING OF COURSE! I bet ANYTHING THEY ARE KILLING MOST ALL OF THESE PUPS! Sadly and with great remorse, Billfisher |

We must all continue to encourage eachother to protect and preserve our pups as much as possible. Much like our children, these pups are the future.
Now enough of that sappiness and let's go get a real one on tonight. I'm sure Catching meant no harm. No harm, on foul. |

Dan (PUP KILLER):
Not nice to call people names my friend Anyway, WILL YOU KINDLY ANSWER MY QUESTION: Did you gaff/kill that 46' Pup Last Night or not???? P.S.: You're right Dan: I would not know what it is to use an 80W standing up fighting some mythological world record Mako like you said you had (HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!; Another fish tale from Dan). I use 50W's to fight fish around here! Anyway Dan, you confirmed the supposed 450 lb Mako from 8 feet above and god knows how far away in the dark?!? Got to teach me that trick sometime! Oh and by the way my largest fish was 86' that I assisted on. With you every fish caught on a boat you're on is yours, RIGHT?! How many Swords have you PERSONALLY CAUGHT FROM START TO FINISH YOURSELF? LIKE 2 in your life!?!? That is what I heard! DAN = FULL OF ALOT OF HOT AIR! At this rate Dan pretty soon I'll look up in the sky and you'll be right there next to the Goodyear blimp! hahaha BUT BACK TO MY MAIN QUESTION: Anyway, WILL YOU KINDLY ANSWER MY QUESTION: Did you gaff/kill that 46' Pup Last Night or not???? |

Relax bro. Its comments like yours that keep the real reports from coming in. I remember when Ron and other pro's used to report here, but no more... I doubt they stopped fishing!
Do you really think this drift boat is doing damage to the industry? That is ignorance. I bet this vessel boats half a dozen swordfish a month at best, especially this time of year. You really think they TARGET pups!? come on now...

Back to the original post.
Good work on nearly getting that mako. Where was the poon? I really think this drift boat is awesome to have in our area, especially when the seas are rough or you want to bring a bunch of friends and family out to the 50.

Hmm, catch two pups then catch ten foot mako. I bet he had a couple easy snacks. Jk, everytime i release a pup i am well aware that sharks are nearby and there's a great chance they will get sharked sometimes no matter how long you take to revive them. Furthermore to the dude that is freaking out, not everyone has a private boat they can take out so we are very fortunate to have a service like catch my drift has provided. Go fishing and stop filling up the forum with useless accusations and crap. You weren't there and no one should have to put up with your ludacris name calling shit. This is exactly why i don't post trip reports on here.
Nuff said. |

Exactly. If you want to instigate problems, do it on your own time. Meet up at a park and beat the crap out of each other like real fisher MEN! Otherwise you should leave the cat-fight crap at home with the women.
No offense ladies. By the way nice talking to you Dan. Good luck tonight. Last edited by LIGHTS OUT; 12-23-2006 at 12:22 PM.. |

pup mortality is a serious issue - Rolando just has a deep passion for swording and like all intelligent sportsman doesnt like to see dead, wasted sword juveniles being killed - he should be commended - not blasted.sword head boat? i could care less. its nice that they are around for the non-boat owners to take advantage of - they dont go out past the 55 anyway from what ive heard - BUT - i would like to see them have a tuna door or something similar to be able to boat, measure and release sword pups without so much damage. cmon guys - how many of you believe any of those "released" pups lived through the experience? Just a thought... what about some sort of heavy-duty "pier net", like we use to land snook from piers or bridges?

Rollin, and Roland fighting that Mako was one of the coolest things I have done, it was assume standing in the pulpit as waves were coming over while we were chasing it down. It was epic
Plus the fact I was spending time with my family at the same time doing something we all love FISHING The crew on the boat is top of the line and making an honest living doing something we all love FISHING and I can assure you Rollin the boat does go out to the 50 line so do not talk about what you do not know it will get you in trouble. Have a good Holiday Dan |

Unfortunately pup mortality is somethign we all have to deal with. I've sent many a pups away with gashes from being so fouled up and i've released many that were simply unharmed hooked in the corner of the mouth... This is somethign we just have to deal with. We all care about this fishery immensely and coming on here and slamming and making accusations gets you know where. If you want to know how its done drift boat style, then go on the catch my drift. I personally don't fish the catch my drift or really swordfish anymore for that matter because im getting educated right now. Nothing pisses me off more than people like you starting shit and portraying sensible fisherman as careless bastards. Dude if you have a problem this isn't the place to start shit. The guy posted a SOLID report and you spoiled it. Why do you think this forum has fallen off.... It's dipshits like you So take your crap out to the 50 and put your money where your mouth is. You bring nothing to the table so walk away.
