Default Solo double header...11/14 report

WOW...Baits out at 6:15 and back through the port at 8:00? 6:50 long balloon just kind of meanders to the right...I watch this for about 5 min. (till I finished my beer) and then I decide to check the bait. No drag pull, balloon still firmly attatched to line.....There is a wierd weight to the line as I reel it in....I get to the balloon and break it off......I continue to crank but only dead weight....I switch to low gear and slowly gain line. At this time I pick my head up just in time to watch balloon #2 get pulled under and then break off. I quickly put rod #1 in the holder and come tight on rod #2. This fish swims almost directly at the boat so I believe that the same fish ate both rod 1 and rod 2 baits. I stick rod 2 in the gunnell and go back to rod 1 since it is an 80 and rod 2 is a 50. The fish on rod 1 finally wakes up and proceedes to pin me to the rail for 4 strong runs....not long, just strong. I finally get the fish to the surface close enough for a gaff.....Stuck him in the gills...but....where is the hook from rod 2? Its not in the swordies mouth that I just stuck and its not wrapped up in the line....SH#@.....I drop swordie 1 on deck and race over to rod 2 and am surprised to see that swordie #2 is still hooked up. By this time this fish is tired and I get him to the boat pretty quickly. Swordie #1 chilling on deck is 53" and swordie #2 (49") gets to go about his merry way. It is now late...almost 7:30 , so wash off the blood and head for the barn. Boat back on the trailer and fish cleaned by 9:30....TIGHT...by the way...all this SOLO! All my reg. crew backed out at last minute so I went alone. Second time I have done this (first with a single engine) and not one regret. Im sure the bite is still off the hook as I write this but I dont see the reasoning behind hooking and hurting another swordie since I already have my fillets....
PS...Both on squid and both hooked inside 50. Belly full 'O squid too.

he was the author of the autobiography A Crew of One. the guy did marlin tournaments alone, and won a few of them up in maryland i believe. the book is worth the short read. the guy just loved to billfish alone.

Nice night considering the conditions on Sunday night to be by yourself, good work. We set up at 7 and missed that early bite. We did catch one barely legal and let him swim. He had 1/2 his gill plate ripped off exposing his gills but it was healed up pretty good and the fish seemed healthy. I heard 2 other boats that had fish on the deck by the time we were setting up.
