Default Flyers Up Draws it's First Blood 11-1-06

It was a great ride out, decide to set up on !#$ and !#$ around 7 , absolutely no wind and slow current had to motor around to get spread out so that took about 30 minutes. Sitting back sipping on a beer, and deep balloon is lays on its side REEL, REEL, REEL, get tight and the hook pulled set back up, a small sword swims by , lots of life in the light darting around, about an hour goes by playing with the tip rod sipping another beer, chatting with CO, then out of the corner of my eye I see the deep balloon is off and skirting across the surface, get on the rod the (80W BTW) REEL, I hear my daughter say Daddy I am taking a P-- ops: REEL, do not care we have a fish on  REEL , REEL get tight and the fish is suicidal and comes right to the boat  . This is were it gets fun, first fish on the 80W drag at 30 pounds rod barley bending, thinking it is probably not a keeper and since it came to the boat so quick no one is ready, fish comes into the light and starts slashing back and fourth then mass chaos :bounce: ](*,) get the gaff, Ok that is done fish is stuck, then where are the gloves ](*,) fish is now going ballistic at the boat gaff rips out, Ok lets try this again. I put the rod in Rod holder, put on a pair of gloves, grab the leader, bring it back to the boat, George sticks it again, I grab the bill and flop on to the deck a 52 inch fatty. Total fight time less than 15 minutes, So I got to fight it, leader it, and lift it into the boat. Fish had with seven squids in the belly, hit the 200 foot bait, green squid with blue light ; though that did not seem to make much of a difference since everything we put out was hit, at every depth, every color, and light combo.

Great night on Flyers Up with a fish in the boat by 9:30 called it at 10 due to nasty looking storms, as we are pulling in the tip rod it gets hammered but the hook pulled. Total count 1-3 and a few slashed baits.

So you could have backed off the drag a bit

But in all seriousness with all the advances in Rods and Reels with 100lb line etc we really need to take care with smaller 47 to 60in fish that get winched to the boat green.Your story is a good example of what to expect when you get a green fish boat side.Be ready have the gloves on and the crew ready to end it quick. Not to long ago that fish would have taken 30min on a 50 with 50 or 60lb line. Now with the big guns they are boat side in 10 min and still full of life  We had a fish like that in the sword lord that was boat side in 1 min then got mad and attacked the boat jumping on top of the motors and swinging for a home run.TD swear it was after him and TJ says it was him the sword was looking at.This story is funny because the fish went back in the water and not in the boat. That would not have been fun 100lb sword going nuts in a CC  ball check time  My point is as always be careful

QQ,

Look at the first pic and notice hook placement, if I would have let any kind of slack in the line once it was close that fish would have been gone.

Default The dark side

NOTHING like the dark side is right...

I am ready for the next one BUT i do need some more equipment like a dart or harpoon. I can see a large fish being a real problem with just a gaff. Well i am feeling better about the fishing trip Saturday Night now that we caught one and cant wait to learn some tips from you guys. I will smoke some sword fish for the trip (sea) you there.

Nice too meet you guys as well...Funny how your fish was SOOOO much fatter than ours. I finally broke down and bought a harpoon on line for $120.00. When you fish a small boat like us we have to be able to controll a fish rather than have the fish controll us! By the way...your sawsall is AWSOME! I think there is one in the near future for me...sure saves the wrists trying to saw thru a swordie bill....
