Default 10/19 1 for 1 and some missing skin!

The crew was set, it was Mate1, Mate1's pops snookit, myself, and the only cherry on board...The harpoon! With a little delay on my part, I pulled up to the ramp around 5:45, and As I told Keith earlier, I had a good feeling! We pointed the bow and went into the calm sea, and after I moved around a little setup on our spot. it was 7:15 and first line goes out. about 10 minutes later we had 3 floats out and I was just attaching the weight on the deep tip when I hear line start peeling fast. Keith Jumps on the rod lets him (her) eat and slams it past strike and put the heat to her. With the new 130 jerry brown, Keith has been really putting heat on fish. The fish takes a 100 yard run at 25+ pounds of drag. And then Keith turns her and starts putting it to her. He says avg fish so All i have is the straight gaff out, the poon is still in 2 pieces. I look at the rod and think it is definitely a keeper, So i put the harpoon together just to break her in. At this point the fish has tangled both other floats, and is slowly coming right up. I lay the harpoon down and get ready to un due a tangle, when the fish surfaces. HOLY $## its not little! Eric grabs the leader with MY leather gloves, and i turn to grab the harpoon. I stick the fish right through the gills, and grab the rope. The fish takes off and I try to stop it, but trust me, I WILL NEVER due that again without gloves! The dart was not cleated, the jap ball was not hooked, the fish pulled 30 feet of line through my hands and into the water. I yell to Eric and Keith telling them not to loose the fish, Eric gets the leader a 2nd time, Keith hands the rod off grabs gaff sticks fish and like clock work over the side he comes. At this point I look at my throbbing hand and say oh shoot, I think we are going in. A little ice and some pain later we finished the drift w/ no other bites. I have been hunting a fish this size for exactly 1 year and 2 days, when I caught my first sword, Now I hunt her mother and grandmother istols: The fish tapped out at 77'' at the dock, we could not get a good measurement on the boat she took up to much room!

P.s total fight time was less then 20min, and the harpoon is now golden!

I feel your pain and rejoice with you. Congrats!!!!!!!!!! I like to learn from each of the post I read. From your thread I think the moral is have the gaff rigged and ready and use gloves.

Nice fatty guys

Use the liquid bandaide on the hand and it should heal quickly, very painfull to apply that stuff but it works great on the hands. Do not how many times I have had to use it for knife cuts on the knuckles, finger tips, and large abrations from tree branches falling into me after Wilma  beer and chiansaws just do not mix well

Looks like tonights trip is cancelled but confrimed for Saturday night

Sweet fish B, and 3 days ago you were about dead with the "Brown Bottle Flu" and couldn't get out of bed.
Hope those hands heal quickly, I need you to help carry the new bait freezer.

Nice job guys.

I won't say anything about the Harpoon line.

It sounds like Aunt Eric already gave you a piece of her mind.

Congadulation to you and the crew on a well deserved fish.

Great fish fellas! You have to learn sooner or later on those big fish, that's what handlining is all about. Next time you'll be more confident on taking some wraps and wrestle that beast.

Did you lose the poon?

I definitly will never due that again, and it would have hurt a lot more if the fish got away. He had so much heat on the fish that he was stll very green, even after ripping the line 30 feet he only made it another 20 feet. The worste part is a had a jap ball rigged and ready, it happen so fast. I couldn't believe I hit him in the money spot at all!

Wrapped my hand, and had som left over bactroban from my motorcycle accident, should be healed and ready to head out sunday/monday.
