Set up at "Bobs AM Hot zone" ( N & E of the Jupiter hump) in 1400 feet at 830 fri night; nothing much on the radio; everyone was hoping for the bite to turn on with the moonrise. No acton till 145 am. Just after we decide to give it to 2 am I notice the closest "noodle" laying on its side. Was running low on rigged squid and macks so I put out a 13-14 inch rigged split tail mullet with a 12-0 and 400 lb mono leader...and wouldnt you know it, one bite all night and its on the mullet! Get on the reel and its completely slack, crank like crazy and get tight. Wake up the young arms and hand em the rod. Back and forth for two hours with 4 runs of 300-400 yds( I even took the rod for 40 min or so) Rex and I decide to turn up the heat and while I am on the rod i push the drag to full ( 47 pounds, yep thats 47 pounds of drag at full.) With our Avet 50's with 150 braid and 100 lb mono top shot we were confident in our tackle and felt it was hooked well. Get the wind on to the rod tip and hand the rod to the young guns so I can glove up to leader the fish. Then we notice a 10 foot shark circling. Suddenly the fish goes deep and takes 300 yds off at max drag in a heartbeat. Were thinking ..OH Sh*t, the shark got it; suddenly it gets easy to crank and we haul in what we think is half a sword; when it comes up I grab the leader and see it ...its a slob, its in one piece but the shark is close by. Rex nails it with the flyer, I stick it twice as hard as I can with the poon and bounce it off its head twice. So I give up with the poon and get a big gaff in it and thru the transom door it comes now dead. 76 inch LJFT and Fat! We head back in and ice it. Weigh it the next day at a marina with a scale that was only five feet off the ground! it reads only 200 ..no way. This slobs gotta be 250 but we forget to get a girth before takin the fillets off! I estimate the girth at about 49 after I measure the width of both fillets and add an inch. So 49x49x76/800 = 228 + 10% for being thick to the tail = 250! And we see its a pumpkin when we fillet and steak it! Its a night like this that makes you keep coming back. Pics to follow.
