We had what I would call a perfect trip, 3/3 on swords plus some warm up tuna. We got offshore about 4 pm wed and caught some livies at a rig not far from our sword spot. Then put two nice 100-110 tunas in the boat including some downtime as we had to let one re-take as much line as he wanted so we could cut and splice the line to an unbroken rod. We told him not to to lift too high....... but.
Next Capt Eddie Burger and myself annouced our plans to our crew that we were taking them to a new spot rather that the spot that we had be catching them in. their reply,...... bull sh_t!!..... we will have to wait till next time for some exploring, or get a new crew or both. At the "old" spot first drift the shallow line got quickly picked up, we got tight and put a 51" in the boat. continued the drift, nothing. We Re set to start deeper. a 62" snatched an swallowed our bait, after some good pressure he came in after about 30 min. Then after another re-set the deep line got hit just after puting the rod in the holder, 47" brought to the boat and released after some serious reviving. He had apparently gone after the weight and got really tangled up. We at first thought we had killed him but he came back and swam away fine. That was it. I hate it then the boat's fuel milage goes to crap because of a loaded fish box. Ron White |

Swordstalker, We have some pics but I haven't figured out hoe to attach them? Is there a free site to put the pics on so that this site can link to them? This last trip make it look really easy, but that's fishing.

THanks Relentless for the help.
OK captions for the pics. First is Matt "rod breaker" Thomas, aka: beaver Next is Big Jon Goeckel with his nice sword Last but not least , holding the 51" is Capt. Eddie Burger the sword whisperer. AND Capt. Charlie Durand aka Capt. Lucky. So now the truth is out, we cheated, we had the guy with the golden horse shoe (put where he needs it). I've been interested and talking swords for a couple of years but those tuna had me under their spell, I now fell a strong pull to the dark side and think I am a goner. I am for sure singing to the choir on this. Ron |

My take is that a sword pulls harder than the equal weight tuna, but the sword gives it up quicker. The ones we caught so far can be broken ,once that happens they come up to the boat. Larger tuna on the other hand can hang swimming on their sides tantillizingly close and even at end game they are still moving when you hit them. The swords heart seems small, especiallycompared to the tuna's heart?
Well, I am just a beginner sword fisherman but that is what it looks like to me now. My friend Capt. Eddie Burger called me this AM about his trip last night, he got a 200# in the boat that he hooked and boated while fighting a much bigger one that after 2 1/2 hours eventually got broken off from the line snagging the bow eye. He said it had to be well over 300# , he is sick now. He had the leader oh so close. Since none of us have got one this big yet, the getting the leader may not have been the end but.....? Oh boy, I'm getting excited just thinking about that. |

Awesome! Nice job on the pics, too, Jr. Those big allison fins are so cool. No wonder they're so hard to move. Caught a lot of them that size in the NE canyons and they're brutal.
